I've read that pork causes arthritis in dogs, so I don't give her any anyway. Thanks for the recipe Teresa!

Pork will upset the digestive track of alot of dogs, not all, but why take the chance

My dolg loves cooked greens (collards, turnip or spinach) w/ a little olive oil over brown rice

It might be b/c of the fat content??

I know not to feed ham as it will cause panreatitis. Perhaps due to the salting process if it's salt cured?

And if bomes are fed, feed these raw as cooked bones are way more brittle and can splinter

This is not a measured recipe, because its what I have at the moment, and or have butchered, so here goes:
Ingredients:
meat, chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, goat or any combination
brown rice cooked
veggys: gr beans, sweet potatoes, corn, all cooked
fruit: apple, diced small
organ meat of any of the above meats
6-8 eggs

put all meat thru a meat grinder like you would for hamburger, mix in rice, (meat 9 cups to 3 cups rice), mix in veggys and fruit, mix in whisked eggs.
Form into loafs and cook at 325 for 30-40 minutes. When cool, slice into meal sizes for your dogs and freeze what you won't use in 3 days. At feeding time add a liquid all purpose vitamin and mineral to loaf just at feeding time. Useing differant meats adds variety ( do not feed pork), and good proper nutition. Boil all bones before feeding, and if you have a bone grinder, grind them lightly boiled or raw and add to food or sprinkle on top at feeding, freeze any not being used immediatly.

I would love the recipe Teresa! I know it is expensive because I've made it before many times but was just wondering if anyone else had any great recipes.

I have an excellant dog food recipe if you are interested. It is not cheap to make your own if you have to buy all of the ingrediants thou. I raise and grow everything right here on my place so cost is minimal. Let me know and I will post it.

Julie, I'm with you. We have 7 dogs and there is no way I could keep up. Our dogs go through about 50 lbs of dog food each week as it is. I wish I could make dog food and I have a couple of times when we ran out or needed extra. I used brown rice, carrots, peas and hamburger (because we have a lot of that). They scarfed it right down, but it took me about an hour and a 1/2 to make enough for all of them for ONE day.

When I make dogfood for Boxer, I first boil a whole chicken. Then I take it out and put a bag of brown rice and a bag of frozen veggies in. After the chicken has cooled , I tear the meat off the bones and add it to the rice & veggies. It makes enough to feed him for about a week, if I add some regular dogfood to his diet. It can also be frozen.

Walmart has a recipe book for dogs, I saw it in the dog food aisle yesterday. A lot of the stuff was cutesy, like doggie cupcakes. Rachel Raye has a recipe in each magazine for dogs, usually good for both human and dog.
DH researched dog food on-line. A lot we saw was horrifying! But he did find recipes too, just don't have them bookmarked.
Like Betty J. we make a mixture of chicken and rice, and add leftover veggies. I also add juice I get from precooking hamburger in water to get rid of the grease and bones and cuttings from roasts, etc. We buy beef from a farmer who doesn't use organ meats like tongue, liver, etc. He just gives it to us when we buy a quater of beef a couple of times a year. That gets mixed in when we have it. We serve it over some a high quality dry food like Blue Buffalo brand.

we always make our dog's dinner. nothing special. but there's something in most dog foods that he has a reaction to. so he usually gets chicken and rice with gravy. hotdogs. cheese. sometimes a potpie or hamburger.

Occasionally I make a chicken meal for my DP. She really enjoys it. It is boiled chicken, rice and a veggie; usually peas. I put the chicken in the food processor and mix the rest in. Don't get around her while she is eating this. She gets grumpy.
