I was just wondering if anyone out there raises pigs - specifically pastured pigs? I've been reading about this type of pig that doesn't really need to be contained in a barn lot - but instead has it's own pasture. Just curious....

Very cool! I want to have at least one dairy cow, a couple of steers raised each year for beef (our first year I will probably double up on the steer purchases and slaughter two early), chickens, pigs and horses. The only thing that won't get eatten are the horses!

yup! we have dairy cows (our main source of income) pigs and hens:)

we raise our pigs outside....we started off with a few, for us and family, now we are at the farmers market every Saturday selling two a week. We live in Canada where it snows most of the time LOL!! no, but it does snow 4-5 months of the year and our pigs are outside in the snow too. they have a small builing that they can go in to get out of the elements.+

We kept our pig in a large outside pen and turned him out to pasture everyday and back in at night. BTW an old time farmer told me to feed him apples because they make the meat tender. Whether that is true or not I don't know but ol' Grunt loved his apples....and he tasted pretty good too. LOL MB

We have two pigs. They have a big area to romp and play in and they feed on pasture, garden scraps, some kitchen stuff and grain. You need more than one there is something about the competition for food that is important for them. Next year I will find a better pasture as we used a lot of grain this year. It was out first with pigs. We hope to butcher in December.

Brandee, We are raising 4 pigs. We bought them this past May, and now they are ready to be butchered. We raised ours on pasture, but we also grain fed them. They are very entertaining. They don't even smell if you raise them in a large enough area.
I have also heard that Large Blacks are really good pigs to raise. I am not even sure what breed we have.

Thank you everyone - this is exactly what I was looking for! I agree with you Kelly - we always buy two of any new animal, mainly for the company. That's how I got up to over 30 goats, cause they all needed a "friend"....

Just something to think about...pigs are very gregarious...I wouldn't ever just raise one because they will get lonely and bored. Raise two. I'm sure you won't have any problem finding someone to buy the second one for you to raise! Good luck and have fun! We LOVE raising our pigs.

My cousins live in eastern WA, but I spend a lot of time with them. They have a padock for the pigs that opens into the pasture. Right now they're selling a pig at a time to chefs in the area, but are hoping to expand as demand increases. They got their sow from a farmer in WY and their breeding boar from a breeder in WA. Google large blacks and you can find loads more info about where they're located and such. They do supplement with the whey from the cheese making (and believe you me...pigs LOVE whey :) ) and the piggies share veggie scraps with the chickens. This winter they will be feeding hay from their own fields.

We don't own any pigs (at this time) but there is a great ranch in Pendelton, OR that raises pastured pigs and sells the meat to stores. It is very good! :)

That sounds yummy Kelly! Are you cousins in Montana as well and do they sell their pork? When we have our own place this is how I would like to raise any pigs that we decide to keep. I don't like the idea of the "pig pen". Do you still have to supplement their feed in the pasture?

Large blacks are the BEST!!! My cousins have them and will breed their sow for spring babies. Gentle and wonderful. They share space with the goats, and don't root as much as other breeds that we've had. Because they're pastured, they have higher levels of omega3 in their meat, and micromarbling for better flavor!
