National Wild Horse Adoption Day is Setp 26; I recently went to the Wild Horse Corrals in Burns and picked up a couple horses to gentle and offer that day.

First is Wadatika, or Tika, from Coyote Lakes. She's a red dun with a lovely flaxen mane. She's seven years old, and typically would have been sent to one of the Long Term Holding facilities, but they're full up (plus she was nursing a foal at shipping time.) I've had her about 10 days. She's not happy about being caught but allows me to lead her a bit and I've begun untangling her mane.

The other is a pinto gelding, age 8. Couldn't figure out why he was so gentle, so we did a bit of research. Turns out he was captured in Idaho as a 2 year old, then adopted out the following year. Last year, at age seven, he found himself back at the corrals. So far we haven't found out why, but he was still a stallion. Idaho sent him to Oregon this past winter, and in February he was gelded. We don't know what type of training he received, but I doubt he's saddle broke. I put a snaffle bit in his mouth yesterday and he reacted like a horse who'd never had anything in his mouth and didn't have a clue how to respond to pressure from it.

Isn't he cute, though?

I wish. I've wanted a hose since I was 1 years old.

Thank you, Maggie. Perhaps you need one???

Tika is now wearing a saddle blanket.

LOL, Huck, I used to be pretty frustrated with some of the photos as well. The closest facility to me is 600 miles away, so getting over to take photos is probably not going to happen But I do believe Tara has done a pretty good job with the last couple of adoptions from the Burns, OR facility.

Hey, Tracy, another thought. The photos they post for the BLM adoptions leave so much to be desired. Have you spoken with them about you taking the photos for them instead? You capture so much beauty and emotion. Of course, we don't want people taking on horses based on emotions....but your photos are so much better!

We make a difference.

Oh, well, that's better than just turning him loose, but sad all the same. Love your photos! We're plotting where to extend our current pasture in preparation for completing our herd. I keep after DH slightly prodding about another horse. Some folks we know would like to re-home a mustang they have and it is so tempting. With 3 riders, one yearling, and one Sr. sweetheart, I calculate one horse too few for good old family rides/picnics/adventures. I'm so glad those horses have you to promote them! You're doing great....here I am scheming and we have a prospect just down the road....

We make a difference.

Wow, they sure are beautiful! If only.... but we can't. I hope that they find wonderful homes soon!

Such pretty animals! The last red dun just looks sad standing there. I so hope they all find good homes.

My g-daughter Kylee adopted a Mustang a couple of years ago His name is Rock Star--well Kylee was 13 at the time--and I will have Kylee take a current pic.
People don't generally know that to adopt a horse you have to follow a lot of rules. You have to sign paperwork, you have to have a proper place to keep him--proper fencing. You have to work with him slowly and quietly every day.
rock Star is ridden now and packed on also. He enjoys being a horse.

Oh Tracey I like the look of Mona. MB

Thank you for the kind words.

Huckleberry, he wasn't turned loose. The BLM went to do a compliance check and he was turned back over to them. No clue why it'd been four years without applying for his title. I saddled him today and picked up all four feet. Also had him standing tied, although he's a bit impatient and likes to paw. He leads very nicely, doesn't even go for grass. It's a strange situation.

Hoping we can find good adopters for both of these horses. Here are a couple more that are still at the corrals:

I call her Mona. She's 15.

Pretty bay gelding, 12 years old.

Red dun, seven years old.

They are beautiful. I could sit and watch horses for entertainment.

Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

I'm sure with the good work you are doing that they will find good homes. Too bad about the pinto possibly being turned loose to find his way back to "homeless" status. Hope they find good folks.

We make a difference.
