Posted - Sep 05 2009 : 5:22:44 PM Just the other day, I trimmed off some of the now dead purple coneflowers growing in my yard. For some reason, I left the seed heads laying on the ground. Then this morning, I was reading in the paper that goldfinches love to eat the seeds. Funny, I thought, I never see any goldfinches around here. Just now I went out to my compost bin and two black and yellow goldfinches flew up from behind the garage. It was so surprising to see them and added a touch of joy to an overcast and somewhat dreary day. It reminded me to appreciate the unexpected beauty of life and thank the Creator for such surprises. I hope your day has some unexpected joy too. Cindy

Posted - Sep 10 2009 : 8:53:48 PM I'm so glad you had that surprise. It's experiences like that the just make the day or week. I say we have so many goldfinches..DH feeds black sunflower seeds...that when they fly away instead of yellow leaves falling from the trees to the ground, they are blowing upward and back to the trees.

Posted - Sep 07 2009 : 8:52:40 PM I've always loved gold finches since I grew up in Iowa and they're Iowa's state bird. Now living in Wisconsin I'm still lucky enough to see them regularly. They love thistle seed and sunflower seeds too. We have some that come to our feeders and bird bath every morning to start their day off with some treats and a nice fresh drink. They're like little bursts of sunshine.

Posted - Sep 05 2009 : 5:54:21 PM Alee--I've found that coneflowers are pretty prolific and I have them in two different locations so I'll probably just let them continue to spread naturally. But it does make me wonder what other types of birds could be attracted by planting the right types of flowers. Donna Rae--I think goldfinches are rather shy, which is probably why I haven't seen them before. Happy bird-watching! Cindy
