I was just outside watering my trumpit flower plant that's under the maple tree that has the hummingbird feeder in it. There were 2 of them buzzing right around me! I was maybe 2' from the feeder and they stayed right there with me talking to them. They are so amazing and just beautiful. I can't even imagine being that small. These 2 were females. I think they must follow my parents up here from S. Ga. because I never see them unless they are here. Just awesome little birds.

I lived across the street years ago from a little lady that started out with just a few feeders and every year had to add more. At one time she had her whole front porch in feeders with hundreds of hummingbirds. Couldn't hardly hear for all the birds flying and fighting! It was an amazing sight. She finally had to stop because she was filling the feeders up all day and couldn't afford the sugar anymore. Plus she went into the nursing home. She loved those birds.

Jennifer, that would have been a really neat picture. I hope you got one. I love wild turkeys too.

I guess they do leave earlier there. But aren't they closer to where they migrate to? Mine are gearing up for their long trip, too. That still amazes me how those really small birds can go so far.

I love them too, but, they have already left for their migration. It seems so lonely when the birds leave.

I was watching the hummingbirds at the rose of sharon outside my window, and a group of turkeys walked by behind them.

Big birds and little birds!!!

I saw some of the prettiest hand made feeders yesterday at the market. But they were $60. They were hand blown glass and some had hooks where more could be added to them. Very pretty. But outta my price range. I think the little $5 plastic ones are just as good. I really don't think the birds care what they get the nectar out of as long as it's full.

That's so neat about your son, Grace.

And isn't that the neatest feeling to be surrounded by all those little creatures? I feel so fortunate when they let me just stand there and watch them and talk to them.

I have one feeder with 6 spouts, and I get dozens of hummers all day long, buzzing within inches of me, not even stopping to let me refill it. They just flit all over me while I rinse and put more sugar water in! I LOVE them, I can't imagine my backyard without them! I'm glad you get to enjoy some too!

My oldest son is like a magnet for hummingbirds - they will fly all around him and even land on his head. I always said he was so sweet that the birds and the butterflies just flock to him - he is now 25 and there could be not a single hummingbird or butterfly around and if he stands still they will come. It is funny when he takes folks into the mountains on guided treks he will have a single butterfly got with him the entire trip - I call it his guidian angel..

Last night I must have had a dozen hummers busy on the flowers on my deck - they where having a ball and I was so blessed to share the evening with them...

I saw one yesterday at our sugar water feeder. It was the first one I've seen all summer. Last year we saw lots of them at our neighbor's wiegala bush but none this year. Not sure why except we had such a cool spring and for much of it summer. They're so much fun to see and make me think of fairies. In my imagination I can see a fairy riding on one. Okay, I'm crazy but they're just soooo special.

Have you seen the last issues of Birds and Blooms? One man had hummingbirds near a whole group of people. Go on the website and see if you can find it.

Have you had the chance to go to an aviary/zoo with a hummingbird area? So wonderful! I was at one in Arizona and the zippy little things were flying into purses after bits of hair on hairbrushes. Amazing! It was nest-building time. They prefered this material over what the keepers set out. Later on, I got to see the chicks being fed in the nest a-la swordswallowers. They are such interesting flying jewels!

I do worry about them flying "though" sunrooms. Have had to free a few when they speared themselves into windowscreening. It was like catching and releasing a little pixie! I cupped them so carefully trying not to hurt/scare the little fluff balls! They are endlessly entertaining. One of my favorite things to watch.

Oh Grace, I would have loved seeing those hummers in your house. It would remind me of little pixie faires.

I have a dead tree with just the trunk and honeysuckle vines all over it that they have nests in. They are so small I can barely see them. Last year they must of got lost on their way back here because I never saw any. They will usually come to the living room window and let me know they're back.

That's so neat to just sit and watch them. They are such territorial birds, too. Only one to a feeder. What a nice way to start the morning, Gena. Are your parents with yoy yet? They would enjoy that, too, I'm sure.

Grace, what a fun sight to have hummers running through the house. I had a guinea in my house one morning. He flew right through the glass window! With it shut.

Kris don't you just love them!!!

The other night just around dusk I had the window open in the livingroom - no screen and I had three male hummer's come thru the window and as if playing tag went thru the livingroom, thru the kitchen, back into the livingroom and so on for a good 10 mintues. It was a sight... They where having such a grand time that all I could do is watch and giggle. Nothing new for the funny farm.

I must say I have been feeding these sweet one's as if they have been starving. I go thru tons of sugar water but it is such a joy I really do not mind. I have one pine tree next to the shop that every year the hummer's build their nests in - I must have a dozen or so in just that one tree. Llama boy even watch out for them - he love watching them feed and twice I have even seen one land on his head and sit a spell - he is so patient he just waits, never moving...

Happy Hummer's to you..

I was just outside with mine. They are my favorite. I have to fill up my feeders every other day. I can sit and watch them from my front porch swing. Nothing like swinging on the old front porch swing, drinking a cup of "jo" and enjoying all the sights and sounds. Just perfect!!
