Anybody know any ways to deter skunks beside trapping and shooting them? I have a good friend in Arizona who seems to be a skunk magnet, lol, and they have babies, so she is trying to figure a way to get them to leave, cause they keep spraying her mini mules , and its not pleasent for anyone. Her minis are rescues, so they are pretty wild and untouchable, so the spray has to wear off , and nobody wants to feed cause ewwwwwwwwwww they stink , lol. All ideas welcome .

my mom caught some orphaned babies once. we bottle fed them and turned them loose in a riverbed, which was miles away and more desirable than the suburbs. we transported them in little cages in her car. they sprayed in the car halfway down our street on the way to the riverbed. thank god it was a convertable!

Winona, she lives in Ash Fork, altitude of 5800, 1 hour or so west of Flagstaff off of Highway 41. She says she has never heard or seen any owls there, so I told her to try the fake owls and mothballs both, lol, so we will see how it goes. I won't be visiting her til she has them gone, been there, done that 1 time when I was a kid, and back then is was tomato sauce to wash in to kill the smell, talk about raw skin.

I feel for you, I really do. Other than shooting them or the owls, I don't have any ideas. There was a skunk the other day out at my barn and I felt sorry for my horse! (She wasn't in the line of fire but a general smell)
AZ should have some owls, I don't know what part of AZ you're talking about but if it's in or close to the White Mountains, there are owls all over the place.

We put mothballs under our porch where the skunks used to hide and that helps. Plastic great horned owls are for sale in some garden catalogs, I bet you could find them on the web somewhere. Good luck. I hate those little stinkers...

Check with your parks and wildlife office they should be able to give you some ideas. Our county extension office also has an agri office that helps us out when we are having wildlife issues on the farm.

You can buy fake plastic owls and post them around the property.

To deter skunks: owls. The Great Horned owl is a skunk's worst enemy. Put up owl nestboxes. I don't know what kind of owls are native to Arizona but there has to be at least one species that feasts on skunks. It's part of the balance of nature.And it's more effective than trapping and shooting.
