This afternoon I got to spend time with my sweet Tala. I gave her a good cool bath since the temps were around 97 degrees. She needed some exercise since she has been in her pen for a few days since things have gotten extra busy. So we did a light to medium work out in the round pen, then the bath, then she got to speed around the outdoor arena which she had lots of fun doing.

Then since we have been working on her fear of water that is outside of her water bucket, I got her to go down to and into the river with me. We crossed the river to an island in the middle. The water came up to about my hips and it felt really nice. It was warm enough to not be shocking, but cool enough to be refreshing.

Tala did great! She followed me very willingly and even splashed about a bit. But then we had a little disaster right in mid river. Her lead rope fell to pieces! The metal clip was still on her halter, but the rope was in my hands. Luckily, Tala is a very sweet girl and held still while I made a made shift re-attachment with some knots.

Then she got to run in the arena a little bit more and then back to her interupted dinner.

We had a really nice time and it was fun to see her get to explore the river a bit more.

Oh my gosh Marly! Tala eats apples so funny! I have to hold it like I would if I were to eat it, and she takes little human sized bites out of it and I have to keep turning it for her! LOL

You seem to have gotten the perfect horse. Next time you go out with Tala to work her, bring her an apple. Tell her I suggested that.

Today was another great day with Tala. We are really making some good progress with lunging. I am starting to work with her on trotting with me in an arena setting in-hand. I would like to show her but we have a lot of work to do before we could even consider entering any show. She is so polite she doesn't want to run next to me, but more behind me and to the side. Then I took her to the long grass to graze. Everything is fenced in so I let her graze loose while I sat on a log close by. The silly horse came and stood right next to me and even tried to chew on the log as if "Well, I GUESS if this is what you want me to eat... I will..." So I had to go stand over by the good grass and clover so she would have something yummy to eat. LOL

Thanks Michelle! She is a sweetheart! It's been really easy to train her to do this. I just load up a pocket or two of apple treats when I grab her halter. She knows that when I come back out I will give her some then too. That and all the ground work that we have been doing to get her attention and respect on me. I wish you could come out and play with her, Michelle! I know you would love her!!

I have started using a distinctive Whistle when I want Tala's attention. Today she literally came running- skidding on her back legs to stop type running when I whistled for her. I love my horse! :D

I had another great day with Tala. I took Sky out with me and we three went into the outdoor arena together. Tala got to run around by herself for quite a while. Then I went out to let Sky run. Tala decided she wanted to run with us. It was fun playing "Race" with my horse. We even got the pasture of two year olds that share a fence with the arena to run with us. I am so excited for next year! She is going to be amazing to ride!!

I'd love to see a portrait of you and Tala. You really ought to see if you can get a good photographer friend to get a great headshot of the two of you. All this love at this special time for you both, it really ought to be captured to enjoy later too, think back and remember these days of bonding and training. I can see it in my mind, and it is lovely! Your bright eyes and her soft trusting head next to yours...what a treasure for Nora to have when she grows up. :)

We make a difference.

You know what my favorite thing that she does is? I love it when she comes up and lowers her head just enough for me to rub and scratch all her favorite places and give her kisses. I am almost glad I got a part time job to keep me a little more busy! I swear being around Tala is addictive and I would be tempted to spend every second I had out there with her! LOL

Oh Alee! It's such a rewarding feeling to make progress with a young horse. I can't think of anything that made me happier than a good training session with my filly when she was still green. To feel that trust, friendship and success with a horse, it just can't be described. Good for you and Tala! It's exciting to read about all your wonderful progress.

Thanks Claudia-

Last night I let her stay out super long, so it was pitch black by the time I finally went to go get her. I had taken her halter off so she could really play. I didn't want her to get a hoof caught in it if she scratched or rolled or something. So anyway, I go into the arena with the leadrope and halter. Tala came right up to me, not a single problem. I just love her. What a sweetheart. Then we both had fun running a little in the safe arena and then we both walked back to her pen. I honestly couldn't ask for a better horse.

Thanks Judy! Nora was going in for a kiss but I timed the picture wrong. They are very sweet together. Right now I am out at the ranch with her, letting her have some time to run around in the big arena outside. She is having lots of fun :D

Tala is beautiful, Alee! You can tell how kind she is by the last photo of Nora and Tala face-to-face. How adorable! Thanks for the link!

She sounds like a sweet girl, Alee. You both seem very compatible to each other. When you have a chance, post some pictures of her. :)

Tala was very good again today. She got to run around the out door arena again. I like to let her have a chance to really stretch her legs. I can't wait until I can take her out into the flat lands and we can run together.

Michelle- Yes, I am very very lucky. The facility she is at is very nice. There is a huge outdoor arena, indoor stalls, a wash rack with hot and cold taps so I can give her a warm bath when it is a bit cooler and I can give her cool rinse downs now while it is so hot.

There are HUGE old growth cottonwoods every where. Right now they are in a huge tree-trimminginge because of some damaging snow storms this past winter. The river is part of the property and they own 2 islands out in the middle of the river. Right now the river is only about 3 foot deep on our side. I guess it gets pretty low or even dries up during normal years. We might still see that this year in August or September.

I love going out there. The people are great and it's a good relaxation for me.

Marly- Tala is great! She's very sweet and very intelligent. I love this time with her but I am looking forward to next year when I can ride her. Then we can really become partners! It will be fun to explore the riding trails together.

That sounds great. Wow, what a place you have to work her in. All the things you want to train with, except the odd disintegrating lead rope.

Hot here today too. Temp. register in town said 102 at one point. I just know it was darn hot. Energy draining hot. Good day to play in water. I gave Q a bath too. We're working on water, and it was so hot, I figured this was a good day to tip the scales in my favor. He was a good boy about it, after awhile. :)

We make a difference.
