Because Hazel the Snake-killing Hen does it for me!! I looked out the window to see Hazel running through the yard with Flora in hot pursuit. Dangling from Hazel's beak was a rather limp, looong brown snake. I went out and herded Flora away so that I could get the darn thing and bury it when Hazel picked it up and with a quick snap sucked that snake down her throat!! ACK!! I thought I was going to be sick. Now I need to watch for her eggs and make sure they are okay. Last year Flora ate a toad and for a week after she laid beautiful brown eggs that contained a watery, bloody mess.
At least that is one more snake down in my yard!! It's worth a few lost eggs.

Maybe chickens wouldn't be so bad to get, if they are going to go after snakes! I didn't know that. A friend had ducks to help (maybe) keep the rattlers out of the yard, but they mostly stayed down at the creek (the ducks)

And yeah the eggs, blech.. could thing you caught those before they went in the batter!

Anna- That's for sure!! I have always done that, so I didn't ruin anything when I cracked open Flora's rather disgusting egg. It looked like something from a horror film. Gag.
Kris- Anytime! lol

Wow what a hen!

I'd have been more grossed out by the eggs too

One more reason to break eggs into a different cooking container when baking for sure

Oh Ellen, can I borrow Hazel and Flora for awhile???? I'd come get them! Mine must be too lazy. I need to quit feeding them, too. Good for her, though. At least it went to good use!

My chickens most favorite " find " is a desert lobster, inother words, a scorpion, then of course they like mice, lizards, snakes, and all insects too.

This reminds me of a saying we have in our family. It comes from the John Denver song "Thank God I'm a Country Boy". The line "Life on the farm is kind of laid back", we used to say that to each other sarcastically when we were milking 250 head of cows in sub zero degree temperatures.
There is always SOMETHING happening on the farm, and it's not always laid back. Whether you're watching your chickens gulp down snakes and toads or dragging Holsteins in and out of the milk barn, it's always an adventure.

A person is a success if they get up in the morning and get to bed at night and in between does what they want to do. Bob Dylan
