I found this really simple recipe online the other day and made them up for Ruby tonight. She LOVES them! It just didn't make very many treats.

I am so glad to know there are other doggy mommas out there that cook for their pups as well as me. When it comes up in conversations with other people that I cook for my dog I get some strange looks. Our golden gets half Flint River kibble and half homemade "canned" food. A butcher nearby sells a dog-grade brick of beef for less than $1 a pound and we add veggies/fruit/rice/flax seed/oatmeal/rice to the crock pot and within a few hours we are ready to go. I love to bake but since my husband is diabetic I do not do it too often so baking doggie treats is the next best thing. I pretty much know that what goes in my dog is all healthy and very good for her so I know I am doing right by her. The vet says she is one of the healthiest goldens in his practice (including his own) and that helps me cook another day for her. After all the scares last year (so sorry Barbara...our neighbor lost their dog the same way) we really felt it was important to make her treats since so many of them come from China. My mom laughs and said their dog (when she was a child) was lucky to get the table scraps after each meal and now her daughter cooks better for the dog than for her family :-). Our dog is family...right?

I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion.

The book sounds wonderful. I'm going to have to check this out! I wish I could check out the bakery too since I'm going to be in Indy this weekend but we probably won't have time. :(

We do have a Three Dog Bakery in one of the malls around us...but I've never shopped there! I'll have to make it a point to go! I am really into the holistic and organic for my family and my dogs and cats!

I'm so glad! It is a great book, and I think everything in it is rather good for dogs...I love that a lot of the baking recipes call for whole wheat flours instead of white. I know Mac and Cleo will soooooo appreciate your efforts! My four guys sure do!

Have you ever visited a Three Dog Bakery? There is one in Indianapolis that we go to, and it's just like a bakery for humans, but all the glass cases have dog cookies, dipped in carob, or other wonderful things like bone shaped cakes. They also have unique collars and organic and holistic dog grooming items. And, of course, it's dog friendly, so lots of people would come in after walks with their pup to get a "snack". He had coffee and drinks for adults, too :)

Jonni...I got the book today and I love it! Will definitely be making Mac and Cleo some special treats tomorrow! I make them birthday cakes too and Cleo has one coming up, (actually on Heidi, my shepherd's birthday...isn't that weird that they would share the same birthday???)
What a variety of things this cookbook has...I am so excited. Thank you for the recommendation!

I have heard great things about Dick Van Patten's food...we use Blue, so I know what you mean about cost. We have a 115 lb. German Shepherd, along with the 3 other larger dogs (about 60-80 lbs. each) so we go through food quite a bit!

Let me know what you think of the cookbook when you get it. I absolutely adore it, and make them special things for their birthdays--well, to share with everyone, because our dogs don't understand that only ONE dog can have a special day!!!

The dogfood was Pedigree!!!!! Now we use Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance and the high grade Purina. At $50 a bag we have to switch off...it can get really expensive. But the Purina is really good and healthy for them. I use salmon for our hounds...they love it! Oh I can't wait to go to Barnes & Noble to get this book now! Thank you for telling me about it!

I can only imagine. Our dogs were eating Diamond brand during the time that Diamond was recalled for the very same reasons...luckily, none of our 4 ever had any issues, but I could only imagine how devastating it would be.

The Three Dog Cookbook is GREAT!!! There are birthday cakes, pizza's, pastas--everything, all with human grade ingredients so you could eat along with your pups. I totally agree with your friend's statement. Our guys get tilapie and veggies mixed in with their holistic food each night. Heck, I'd eat it in a pinch!!!

Awwww...thank you, Jonni, my heart still hurts every day from losing her! Thank you so much for saying that!

I have heard about that Cookbook and have to get it! I do a few cutouts too. I have a friend who makes and sells organic dog treats and she made a good point! She says, if we can't eat it, why would we give it to our pets! After losing Heidi, I totally agree with her!

Oh, so sorry, Barbara--that's awful.

I have made some in the past for friends and family at Christmas...the recipes I use are from the Three Dog Bakery cookbook...almost everything is stuff you have on hand in your pantry. My dogs were HUGE fans and since it was the holiday, I cut out stars, santas, trees, etc...VERY well received :)

I recall it making like 3-4 dozen or something--I know I was rolling and cutting out cookies for some time!

I started making all of my dogs' treats after my Shepherd passed last summer from a tainted batch of quality dog food. I feel our dogs & cats should not have to eat garbage by products! I now have two greyhounds who only get good quality treats and food. I make them pumpkin and sweet potato snacks. And even use baby food in their dinners and snacks. They love it and since we've had them you can see a difference in their coats and teeth.

I haven't made any lately..but do sometimes. I have made them as gifts for "family dog relatives" in the past too..given in canning jars with doggy fabric and a tag that says "give the dog a bone".

3- 2.5 ounce jars of baby food- beef or chicken flavor
1/4 cup cream of wheat
1/4 cup nonfat dry milk

mix it all together. roll into balls, slightly flatten with fork and place on well greased cookie sheet. bake at 350 degress for 15 minutes. it only makes about a dozen treats. maybe two dozen. i might have made mine a little big. LOL

I used to make them when we first got our dog. He was a puppy then, so making a couple dozen lasted him a good bit. Now he's more like a horse...LOL..so a couple dozen doesn't even last him a week. I find it easier to just buy the treats in surplus. :D
I'd love to know your recipe you found though. Mine was with whole wheat and something else, but I can't remember what..lol..sorry my brains is not working at the moment..
