Posted - Jul 21 2009 : 06:09:19 AM chickie so far! I had counted 13 eggs under that lttle banty at one time but she was off the nest this morning and there are only 10 now. Plus one little bitty chickie. And it hatched yesterday. She got back on after she ate, so I hope some more hatch today.
And this is it!
The last batch of 8 is down to 6 now. There were 7 yesterday and 1 has disappeared. I was outside all day, too. They are in the pasture with goats and cows now so maybe it got lost or stepped on.
I think the reason the first 8 are all still alive is because I kept them in the hen house over a month til they were bigger. But these newer ones have been out this whole time.

Posted - Jul 24 2009 : 2:28:24 PM Isn't it funny to see the little beaks poking out from under Mama? And you just wonder how many there are under her that you can't see yet!!
Oh, and I saw this the other day http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkuohLV2u0k
Struck me as hilarious, knowing how carefully I encourage the kids to handle the chicks....and there are the hatchery people, flinging them left and right... :) The Biz www.tvalahandmade.com The Blog: http://blog.tvalahandmade.com/ The Bits www.happydalehobby.blogspot.com/

Posted - Jul 24 2009 : 1:43:04 PM I saw another one!!! Poking it's tiny little head out from under momma's wing! I can't tell if there are any more yet. But it's been 5 days since the first one hatched. The momma has stayed close to the nest and on it most of the time since then. I can't wait to see if there will be more. This new one is so little. But the first one now has a sister or brother. More than likely a brother, the way it's been going around here. The males are ahead by alot.

Posted - Jul 23 2009 : 1:07:22 PM Yep, looks like one lone little chickie made it. All by itself. The nest still has the rest of the eggs in it. They slept there last night. But no more little ones. I guess that's ok. I would have liked some of the Welsummer eggs to have hatched, though.
We lost another of the 8 chicks. Down to 5 now. I have no idea what happens to them. I saw it yesterday. It had a little limp, too.

Posted - Jul 21 2009 : 8:01:46 PM She was still on the nest this evening so I can't tell if any more have hatched. She looked a little bigger though. It is amazing how the little chicks hatch out underneath the hen and are dried in no time. I can't wait to see if the rest of them a hatched . They should have been all done today. But I could have been off a day or two. I tried to get her off so i could look under her but she's a mean mamma.

Posted - Jul 21 2009 : 4:55:24 PM How fun! I could sit all day just watching the hen while they are hatching out. It is amazing how fast they get all fluffy. Smiles, Melody June
