I finally got my new laying hens. I usually get the standard Hyline as they are such great producers. This time they sent me these!! I think the one with the black tail is a Buff Brahma(?), but what about the other one? Anyone have experience with these guys?

They're very pretty hens, whatever they are. My money would be on a MIX too though. You get some VERY interesting things sometimes from the hatcheries.
Last year my friend ordered white silkies. One of them had red earlobes (white silkies have BLUE earlobes), a yellow beak, light colored skin, and YELLOW legs! Silkies have BLACK skin (or "Mullberry" as some sources describe it) and slate GRAY (or blue) legs! They also have 5 toes, feathered shanks, and, believe it or not, they even have very dark colored (nearly black) BONES! (WEIRD!!!) The bird certainly LOOKS like a Silkie, but the COLORS of the face and legs give away the fact that she's a MIX. Only God and the mother chicken know WHAT that mix is!

Comets lay brown eggs. But they won't reproduce true. I never thought of a Chantecler...bute then, I've never seen a real one either! haha!

Maybe they are crosses of comets, chantecler and brahmas!! haha. Not really...Brahmas lay brown eggs..not sure about comets..I wish I could remember. If they don't have feathered legs by now..they won't get them. They sort of are born with that. It looks so cute on a little chick!! They are sure pretty, whatever they are!!

I believe the black tail one is a Red Chantecler and the white tailed one is a Buff Chantecler. If I'm correct they both do really well in very cold weather, are good for both meat and lay brown eggs.
I checked them out on the site Ideal Poultry where I always get my chicks. You can send them an email with the pics and they will tell you for sure.

Ok dumb question..do the Golden Comets lay brown eggs?
Second dumb question...can Golden Comets have either black or white tail feathers like these guys? |

they completely look like Golden Comets to me. I've got 4 of them and they look pretty much the same. Yep, call whoever you got them from and get a replacement.

Thanks you guys. I have no idea then, but I think you might be right Teresa...a cross of some kind. Jenny, I got the idea of the Buff Brahma from a pic I found online from a poultry site. Some of them do look like they will have feathered legs. These guys are just barely at point-of-lay, some will be a few weeks yet.
Some also look like a lighter colored Hyline, some definitely not.
Right now we have to take what you can get. There is a six to eight month wait list for any kind of laying hen.
Oh well, as long as they lay eggs I'm happy. They are sure pretty to look at. |

They look like the Golden Comets my sis in law had once. They for sure arn't Brahmas.

Brahmas have featherd legs/feet, I'm not sure? If these are not what you ordered, I'd be calling them. They look alittle like rhode Island reds, but , way to light colored. My guess is they are crosses of some kind?
