Posted - Jul 04 2009 : 04:20:14 AM So sad. And it's a very long story... But I wondered what you guys do when you have a large deceased animal that you can't eat? We have a dead dear in our yard that we must dispose of. Any advice? (We're never had to deal with this before.) Is digging a grave the best thing? How deep does it need to be? Anything I need to know? (We have dogs and want to make sure they can't find the grave.) Thanks so much... :( |

Posted - Jul 04 2009 : 07:18:40 AM Thank you Julie and Lillian. I see now that I typed "dear" instead of "deer". That's interesting because she was a DEAR DEER. A mom. She was injured and at least is no longer suffering. We've been trying to save the DEAR Mom DEER and her baby for a couple of days. (The baby is fine and is at a rehabilitator's now.) Lillian, Boy, I've tried. I've called everybody. No one will help us because it is on "private" property. Of course, it is also July 4th. I was referred to a local company that comes to help in these matters. They haven't returned my call. Julie, That sounds like good advice. I'm thinking we're going to have to handle this ourselves. And that's okay. I'm just so sad. (Softie here.) |

Posted - Jul 04 2009 : 06:32:18 AM We have a large enough property that we would likely drag it further into the woods and allow wild animals to feed off of it. If that is not a possibility you can dig a hole. I would dig deep enough that you can cover it with at least 4 inches of dirt. More if possible. You will also want to get some agricultural or garden lime. Sprinkle VERY generously over the carcus and then cover with dirt. Pour more lime over the dirt. This helps to cut down on the smell that will attract dogs and wild animals.
Dogs are smart and will likely find the grave. If they have seen and smelled the deer they will pick up on the scent. Do not allow them to see where you are burying it, if possible. You will need to watch them closly if you are concerned about digging.
Another option is to pour powdered concrete into the hole with the deer and then water the ground after you cover with dirt. Not the best option in my opinion.
