Posted - Jun 05 2009 : 09:33:47 AM Well I have been round penning Tala for almost 2 weeks now, and after a while, circles and changing direction just get a tad bit routine. So since she is being such a good girl and I was having her do quick direction changes, I decided to try something.
I have just been round penning her with the lunge whip. I haven't been lunging her (with the rope attached to the halter). So anyway I decided to see if she would do figure 8's for me and she does! It's so neat to watch. I send her around a couple of times and then as she comes around the curve of the round pen/arena, I tell her to change directions while I back up just a bit which gives her the cue to come toward me. I keep her moving towards the opposite fence line and give her the command to change directions as she gets to the fence. At this point she has described an S shape. So then I tell her to change directions again and again I back up a few steps while still cueing her to keep moving. She is such a good girl! She'll trot figure 8's for me and really does everything I want her to do. I wish I could start her under saddle- I think she would do fantastic, but she still gets another year of growing before I do that.
I am so thrilled that she is so in tune with my cues that she listens and does things that I hadn't even thought of a week ago! Now if only Nora listened as well as Tala does! LOL

Posted - Jun 05 2009 : 7:08:28 PM Yes I am! I really miss my house and my routines and of course my husband, but I am dreading leaving! There is a certain magic here on the Ranch. It's as if it is insulated from the rest of the world. I have my internet, the horses and the dogs- what more do I need? Can you tell I can be a bit of a recluse?

Posted - Jun 05 2009 : 5:46:07 PM Oh, Alee, what a wonderful thing to be so attuned to one another! That's how my dog, Emma, and I are together. I know, big difference between a dog and a horse, but still, I have a bit of understanding. I know it's a proud moment for you!

Posted - Jun 05 2009 : 5:13:39 PM Thanks Michelle! I am both excited to be taking her home next month and also scared! I don't want to "drop the ball" and not be able to provide for her. I am sure it will all work out, but somedays I wonder if I am crazy!!
