A friend of mine put an ad on Craig's list for me about the goat kids the other day. I just had a couple come buy one of the bucks! And they just live not far from me. Thay have sheep and lambs and 2 cows and 2 Nubian does. But they only got one. He's just 6 weeks old. I tried to get them to take 2 but the lady said no. He wanted a wether that kept pulling on his pant leg. But she said no. I hope he does ok. They said they'd give him a few days and if they need to they'll come get the other one. I just hate to have one by itself. I made them a good deal, too.

So that's 4 down, 6 or 7 to go! I'm not sure if I'm going to keep the other little doeling yet. If someone wants her I will sell her but if not she can stay. She's a sweetie. Now if I can get my friend to come get her 3.

Wish me luck on selling the rest of them. I'll need it for sure.

Gena, I had to look on the map. But it looks like from N.C. you would take 575 down to Canton which is right above Marrietta near Atlanta. 575 goes into 75 or 20 west which then goes up north to Chattanooga which is very close to Kelly and me. So maybe one day you could come here. It doesn't really look that far from here.

Kelly, any goat with horns has an advantage over goats without. So I try to keep goats without. I do have one doe that is a friends that does not want to milk right now and she uses her horns alot and not in a nice way at all. And it's also hard to get horned goats' heads into the stanchion to milk them. So as far as bucks, yes they will use the horns to fight, too. It is good protection but they really don't need them here. They also get their heads stuck in fences and it's just a big ole neiusance to me. And it doesn't hurt for too long when they are burned off. And dairy goats are just generally better hornless.

Gena, I have Lamancha and one Nubian. Actually, 2 of the Lamancha's are half Toggenburg. They have wonderful udders. Next fall I think I would like to find a Togg. buck to breed them with so maybe I'll get some with the upright ears of the Togg. Then also I want to get a Nubian buck to breed my Nubian doe so I'll get some of the long Nubian ears. I love those. I did have an Alpine mix doe that was a really good milker when I first started out milking.

Thank you Kelly. I am dreading it so much, but I know it will be better in the long run. My SIL lives in Canton GA. How far is that from Chickamauga?

Gena, We will be thinking of you this Monday, and when you are healed you can join us for a gathering, we should have some kind of gathering where we can all meet in the middle! That would be so fun, a farmgirl weekend somewhere! Kris, will the males fight with those horns? Are they harder to sell with horns? why? I am goat curious!
southerncrossgirl Posted - Jun 05 2009 : 04:01:49 AM
I wish I had my Nubians back. I sold the whole herd to buy the Nigerians. They call Nigerians a milking breed, but I want to see how loonnggggg it would take someone to get a gallon of milk. It is just not worth it! I had to try making butter from milk from our neighbors dairy cow. OMG, that butter was wonderful! Now, I want a "large" milking breed of goat. Is their anyone that has tried several breeds, and they like one better for milking?

I had to take the last baby girl to get disbudded today and also took 3 of the boys, too. Their horns were starting to grow back. Well, she could only do the littlest one. She couldn't do the bigger 2 boys because they had gotten too big. She did do the girl, though. Hers were just the right size. So I will have 2 bucks with horns. I hope they will sell. I really need to learn how to disbud them all myself. I could get them in time and not have to wait on someone else to do it. Plus I'd save a bunch of money.

Hey Kelly, One of my favorite birthday presents was a GOAT TOTE!
I am so jealous of you girls being able to get together. I hope you all have a wonderful time. You will need to think about me on Monday. I will be having a surgical full hysterectomy! I sure hope I can bounce back fairly quickly.

Sounds like fun, yes please let me know I would love to meet more Farmgirls!
kristin sherrill Posted - Jun 02 2009 : 6:38:34 PM
Yep, your a farmgirl now. A tiller for your birthday is a sure sign. I always ask for things for the farm for me, too. Like wheel barrows and wagons. Always needing things like that.

I hope you are able to come visit. Nikki and Cherry from Alabama are going to come in a few weeks, I hope. That would be fun if you could come when they do. I'll let you know for sure when they come.

See ya soon. Kris

Well hello Kelly! I have missed you. I know you are very busy and now unpacking. I am so glad you're in the new house finally. I bet it's just beautiful. How's the garden?

Gena, there is supposed to be a tutorial on the Welcome section how to post pics. Lots of people use Photobucket. I have that, too, but with dial-up it just won't work for me. Alee is a good one to ask how to post or where the tutorial is.

The lady I was going to give my ducks to today is thinking about getting a few of the bucks, too. She lives way back off the road on this little one lane country dead end road. It's so beautiful back there. We have gotten hay from the field at the very end. It's a hunting club. But the place she wants to put them is so neat. An old barn and a few other barns. They would need to put a strand of electric near the bottom of the wooden fence, so she needs to see if her hubby wants to do all that. But they need some clearing out bad back there. I wish I could load up all mine and let her keep them there. It's so beautiful there.

I'm glad you're going to keep your baby. I wish I could see a picture of them all. The phone company is working on the lines again, so maybe soon I'll have high speed and I can post pics, too.

You are right Kris. I will keep the unregistered too. Who knows they may sell better, because I won't ask quite as much for them.

You know, some people just aren't that concerned about registered or un. I think my concern is also about the NIAS. I don't want to be told what to do or how to do it here on my own place. I have Lamanchas so I'd have to buy the tattoo equipement and it also costs so much to register each one. I paid $300 for a registered doe and she ended up having CAE, too. There is no way I'd get anything out of her now. And if someone will be butchering some of the bucks or wethers it doesn't make them taste any better. I guess I am too anti anything anymore really. And there are plenty of other places to get regestered animals if that's what they'd rather have.

We have a paper here in Ga. called the Market Bulletin. There are just as many unregistered goats for sale as there are registered. And the prices aren't too much different really. I think if she comes from a good doe you should keep her. That's why I may end up keeping my other doeling because her mother is a great milker with good udders and very east to handle. And she's a cutie, too.

Diana, I am so glad you got new goats. I'm going over to look at the pictures on your blog now and to see the barn. I've been keeping up on the progress.

Kris, I was curious about all mine being registered. I think that I am not going to be so picky about that anymore. All of my stock were registered, until I bought 1 doe (from the lady I bought my other does from), well, I assumed she was registered when I picked her up and I really didn't pay that much attention to her papers. Actually, she was registered, but with a different society than my buck and all the others. I decided I was not joining another society and finding another buck for just her. I guess you know SHE was the one that had my only doe kid that was born! So the question is I guess do I cull her from my stock, or just sell some as unregistered?

Hey Gena. 2 of my older does were registered but I just don't want to fool with all the tattooing business and #'s and so I don't do it. I know I could get more money for them but not always. I sold 2 little doelings last year for $150 a piece. That was just luck. They went to a great home, too.

Kris, I only got 1 doe kid this year. I think I will hold on to her and build up my herd a bit. I hear animals are just not selling this year because of the economy. If I can give my wethers to any of my friends, I usually do that.
Good luck selling your goats.
Do you have registered and unregistered goats?

That would be great, Tina! I'm sure I'll have plenty again. They seem to be quite prolific girls. I think they will all get sold. It will just take some time. But it sure would be nice.
