My friends that have the horse ranch that I am helping watch have a mare that we have thought was going to foal the last 2 days running. Tonight she is showing even more signs, so we are up every 15 minutes all night long to check to see if she is foaling via closed circuit cameras. Anyone want to stay up and watch with me?

I am about to go check on her...

We just drew blood from the foal. He was so good! We have to test to make sure he is getting the proper antibodies from the mother. He is so good. I feel like a proud mama!

Alee, I'm glad it all went well for her and the colt. He sounds like a cutey.

His mama is doing great. We stayed there until he got his feet under him and nursed. He was funny learning to get his feet under him and walk. He's a champion little guy with a gorgeous face! The only thing that would be better is if he was a filly. This little guy will become a gelding in a few months.

Wow! we had a pretty ordinary night here. But you had the party at your barn WOOHOO! So you have a wee colt or maybe not so wee =) If you can catch the moments of them just trying their legs the first time, it is a hoot! How is his mama? I bet everyone is full on happy and excited! can't wait to see the pics!

Hi Annika! Hope your baby watch is going well!

I just got in from helping with a delivery! We have a beautiful red bay born! He is a bit mousey around the muzzel and eyes so he might go grey. He is huge! We will try and estimate his weight a bit better tomorrow, but he is the biggest foal that the ranch manager has seen! I accidently forgot to set my alarm the last time, but woke up anyway. I could see the mare laying down and moving around a bit, wringing her neck and reaching back to bite at there ribs. I thought I saw a foot protruding and ran to wake up Bryony the ranch manager. I grabbed a bucket of hot water and added iodine. She grabbed the foaling kit and the foaling towels. We got up there and applied gentle traction to his foreglegs. His muzzle soon came out but he got stuck at the forehead. We both pulled during her contractions and after the head, he slipped right out. We used the hemostats to clamp the umbilical cord, and in horses the umbilical cord usually will break a certain distance from the body. We did run into a little problem as the umbilical cord started gushing blood on the mare side of the hemostat. It wouldn't abate so we called the vet just to make sure. While we were waiting for the vet to call back I told Bryony that I thought we should move the hemostats a bit closer to the mare. At this point the foal's umbilical had broken properly so I as just thinking of using the hemostats as a tourniqite. It worked and the vet said that was the right thing to do.

It took the mare about 45 minutes to pass the placenta during most of the time we kept the foal on the ground doing imprinting work. We rubbed the foal down, played with his hooves, ears, eyes and nose to get him used to this type of handling. He got to his feet after some very funny false starts. And it didn't take him too long to start nursing. All together delivery to nursing was about 2 hours!

Thanks Annika! She is even prettier in person and is such a sweetheart. I totally trust her around Nora. I think she would hurt herself before hurting anyone else. She is just so sweet and kind.

Yes, Binty has been waxed up for about a week. Her wax is even more than that picture! She also was squirting colostrum/serum with every step the other night. That night she laid down and did the same thing- got into the labor position and grunted a lot but then got up and we are still waiting.

Annika- Yup! I am on foal watch right now! I will probably set the alarm in the next hour or so and start getting my cat naps.

Whew! I was a little worried there. That is normal. My mare Charm, when she is about 3 mths from foaling starts to leave grain in her bucket. I was really worried the first year she did that. Think about how you felt when you were 9 mths pregnant. She is feeling the same way. I know I did. I had twins. Has she waxed up yet. Party Favor tricked me with her first baby. One night she layed down and groaned and stuck her legs out. Thought for sure she was going to have the baby. Not!! She had the baby 2 days later. I think the baby was just turning around to get ready. Boy when it came time she waxed up big time. Here is a picture of it.

Baby is taking up a lot of room, she likely feels full enough already with out eating a lot, poor girl!
You about to go on evening watch Alee? I've been on baby watch for a while with all of the sheep and goats =) I usually take the late evening watch, since I'm up anyway til after midnight.
Glad to hear she is eating a bit tho'
Waves hi over the hill to Alee!
Hoping for a foal tonight!

Hi Jennifer- She has been eating- just not like she normally does. We feed 3-4 times a day to keep hay in front of the horses at all times. Lately she has been eating only about 2 flakes of hay a day plus about 4 pounds of grain (Strategy brand). She is looking good. her coat is glossy and she has great body condition. I think she is just very uncomfortable.

Oh and no foal yet. Hopefully soon! She is so soft in the rear that we are joking that the foal could just slip out with no effort.

I bet you are getting tired Allee. I know I did when we were on foal watch. We had all our babies within about 2 wks of each other. Glad to get it all done at once.
Hope she is okay with not eating. Mine have never done that before. One mare actually ate breakfast and before she was done she laid down and had her baby.
Keep us posted!

How exciting Alee! I hope Binty and babe have an easy time with birthing. She will probably drop that foal the minute you drift off...they always seem to on me at least. We are expecting a half Frisian foal next month at the farm here, so I will eventually be on foal watch too, not my horse, sadly, but exciting still. Good luck and keep us posted, I can't wait for pics!
