It's a sad day here at Outback Farm. This morning as I was feeding I noticed it was awfully quiet. I didn't realize why for a few minutes. I could not hear Russell. He's usually right there when I feed the girls clucking to them showing them where the food is. I didn't hear that and realized he was nowhere to be seen. I called him and looked around, but no Russell. I checked along the fence where he's been roosting lately. Right ubder the tree where the hens roost is where he started roosting. It's across the driveway from the chicken yard. So I checked along the driveway going towards the road and found a few of his feathers. No sign of a struggle, no blood, no body. Nothing. Even at the road, nothing. I have a feeling it was the 2 Aus. shepards across the road. He was the best rooster I have ever had. He will be missed. The girls are staying in the chicken yard. They know he's gone. It's like they're lost without him. It's just too sad. First time this has ever happened here. I had just taken some really good pictures of him last week. I'm glad I did now.

It's just too quiet.

Thanks, Alee. I just don't think that will happen, though.

I kept waking up during the night thinking I heard him crowing. I think I wanted to hear it so bad. I asked my DD this morning if she noticed anything different and she said she didn't hear the rooster crowing at 4:30 like he always did.

I looked around out there this morning and still don't see any sogns of a struggle or any more feathers. It's just a mystery to me. It could have happened before it got dark. Maybe it was a hawk. But he was so big and heavy. It had to have been a huge hawk. Any other critter would have left something behind.

Anyway, I guess we'll just wait on a Russell Crowe, Jr. I'm sure there is one in the bunh of offspring.

Ya'll are all so sweet. Thank you so much for all your thoughts and prayers. I just want to cry again. I do miss that boy. It has been a very quiet day. I think the girls are all in shock. I don't think they've left the yard, although I have been gone several hours, but they were all just milling about. Not really knowing what to do with theirselves yet.

Yes, there are 5 little Crowe offspring. He was always poking his head in the hen house to see them. I always have several roosters when they hatch here. So I hope one of them will be a roo and look like him. At least have his wonderful personality. Last year I had some hatch when I had the BR hens and the only survivor was a roo exactly like him. I'll have to call the girl that got him and tell her if she needs to get rid of him, I'll take him.

Maybe he did just get scared off. I hope so. I would love to see the big guy come strutting up the driveway. He will be missed very much. It's just so sad when things like this happen. I had him since he was a wee little chick, about 4 years now. Great rooster.

I am So SORRY for your loss Kris

The hens and I send your our thoughts and prayers and know that he will live on in your memories and heart. It is never easy to have one of our dear one's taken from us before their time but that only goes to keep us on our toes and remember to live each day to the fullest with our feather, fur and human family members.

Hugs to you and Russell wherever he may be.

Oh no!!! Maybe he just got chased far away and will be straggling back--soon!
I hate it when that happens. A good rooster is hard to find. MB
