I went and bought 4 three day old chicks today and I love, love, love them! I have 2 Golden Comets and 2 Easter Eggers. They are so cute and my kids love watching them. I really hope that I'm a good "mom" to them. Right now I seem over protective, but I worry about them being warm. I would appreciate any advice fom all of you seasoned chicken mommas out there!!! Thanks so much!

Well, my babies are 6 days old and doing great! I do have one that is a little smaller, but she is feisty :) I love them all and can't wait to see them grow up and be big, beautiful hens!

Also I forgot to add. When they get a little older (2wks or so) they can have broccoli tops and clumps of dirt with grass scrambled or boiled eggs seedless grapes and the list goes on. When you do start, start slow and add chick grit with feed so they can digest properly. You do not need grit for adding yogurt. Have fun!

I put a tomato in with mine for them to peck at. I just started doing this because I have turkey poults in with mine and they love it too. It really keeps everyone busy busy. Another suggeston is to mix plain yogurt with their food. Gives them a little variety and it's really good for them. Also I have seen people use bird toys for them to play with. I have never done this so I have no idea about how it works. Good Luck! HUGS

Congratulations!

I don't have chicken chicks myself, but I do have button quail. Thier chicks look just like chicken chicks, only a lot smaller. I love when they hatch out. They are such cute little rascals! Chicks are so much fun!

Thanks! Well I'm on day three of being a "chick Momma" and enjoying it. They seem happy, but I am definitely going to get them a red bulb. They are very active and they hear everything! Two of them are skittish when it comes to holding them, but I think that they'll adjust. One is VERY vocal too. I am so excited about having them.

One question - do any of you put something in the brooder to keep them occupied? They seem bored sometimes.

Werlcome to the new "chicken momma" club! As long as you have them under a heat lamp, they should be fine. I like the red bulbs better and I need to get another for my babes. The white light is a bit too bright and I feel like they never sleep. They do when I turn it off during the day. Also with red light they won't peck at each other.

Don't worry too much. They will be fine. We've even dropped some of ours on concret floors and they are ok. Have fun with them.

I think that's what my 3 chicks are that are with the momma hen. I got those eggs from the people up the road and they have the red star hens. The other 5 are mixed Barred Rock and game from my flock. They look BR though.
