Posted - Apr 16 2009 : 11:40:52 AM Why is it that when you get chicks from the feed store, they don't always know what chick is what and you end up with who knows what? I just ordered some bantams and I thought they were Mille Fleurs and cochins but at 4 weeks they are not looking like I expected! Guess I'll just have to be surprised when I finally figure them out!

Posted - Apr 19 2009 : 1:04:45 PM nope! didn't take it that way at all.. I only know what I'm taught! I showed the owner of the hatchery that pic and she agreed that they didn't look like milles too... so shows what we know!

Posted - Apr 19 2009 : 03:49:36 AM I am fairly new to this breed as well. On a whim, ordered 3 last spring. Ended up with 2 roos a and 1 hen. I roo is a bit standoffish, but the other 2 don't mind being picked up. In fact, the nicer roo begs and clucks as me to be hand fed!
These are really cool birds so best of luck with yours! |

Posted - Apr 17 2009 : 5:48:32 PM Here is a great link I found for Mille's. It shows all the colors adult and chick. This site also has almost any other chicken you might wonder what it looks like.
Good Luck!

Posted - Apr 17 2009 : 3:51:36 PM No it's not a cochin. She is a Mille and is the same size as my BBR. Mille's come in all different colors and she is feathering out buff white and black. Thanks

Posted - Apr 17 2009 : 3:18:18 PM Well.... hmmm..... I gotta tell ya, I'm in no way an expert. But that doesn't look ANYTHING like the baby mille's we sell at the hatchery. Baby Mille's are almost a cocoa brown color until they feather out. I almost wonder if that one isn't a standard cochin (it looks big in the pic). Cochins come in all colors. The leg feathers in the pic look almost partridge in color (could be the light behind it). Either way, if you got a cochin, they are the sweetest birds ever. Keep us posted!

Posted - Apr 17 2009 : 10:17:21 AM Ahh... feed store chicks. Unless you, AND the person at the store know their chicks very well, it's like a crap shoot isn't it? But even an "Expert" can get it wrong-- so many chicken breeds start out looking the SAME!!!
My friend special ordered some Delaware chicks last year, and ended up with HALF of them being broiler birds!!! She was SOOOOO disappointed, but thought she could just raise them like all her other birds. Not so. 8wks is the limit of life for those birds and the rooster actually got sick and died at about 5wks, so her husband butchered the last one at 6wks. My friend was sad that they had to die, but said the hen they ate was the best tasting bird she'd ever had!
So, if you're "New" to chickens, steer clear of the "Cornish X" chicks and the White and Bronze Broadbreasted turkeys. All of those birds were bred for the TABLE, and not as pets. They grow so fast and EAT A LOT, and aren't meant to live out a long happy life like their egg laying counter parts.
Hope your chickies turn out to be just what you wanted. Both breeds are some of MY favorites too!! Hugs ~~~ Tracy

Posted - Apr 16 2009 : 9:10:42 PM I just ordered some Mille Fleur's too. By 4 weeks your chicks should have most of their feathers...I would love to see pics too.
