Posted - May 29 2009 : 9:35:42 PM For anyone looking for really great halters I have been getting mine from Kustom Kritter Fitters. The will make them to measure. I have one horse with a bigger than average quarter horse head but not big enough for draft and one with a small quarter horse head not small enough for an arabian halter. They custom made them. They will do lots of colors and do unusual color combinations. They also embroidery names and phone numbers on them. I have one purple and turquoise and one turquoise and chocolate. I also get the dog collars there with the phone numbers. Our Great Danes got out once and someone called and said "Your dogs are in my yard" my daughter asked how they knew it was our dogs and she said "I can read the phone number out my kitchen window" Guess having the phone number put on paid off. LOL Oh they make braided lead ropes to match the halter colors. They also guarantee the hardware for life and will replace anything that bends or breaks for free.

Posted - May 27 2009 : 3:37:55 PM If I only have to buy one or two of something I try to buy local but we have 12 horses so I have to find the best deal and it is usually not at my local feed store. I have used Jeffers, Dover, Smartpak, and I have to use Schnieders for my halters since I have Arabians. They seem to be the only place I can get them for Arabs.

Posted - May 27 2009 : 09:09:28 AM I agree with the other Farmgirls who suggested buying local if possible. We have the Country Store and Orscheln local to us. Orscheln has the best prices. There's also a western store near us (Circle C) where we got my new trail saddle for Christmas and most of our halters and leads. Online I usually buy from AJTack Wholesale at http://www.ajtackwholesale.com/servlet/StoreFront where shipping is free if you order over $20 of products and they have awesome sales. I'm thinking of ordering a pink saddle carrying set.

Posted - Apr 21 2009 : 6:00:12 PM Just a warning about horse.com they advertise free shipping if you spend over $50 but they don't tell you if something is not in stock andthen your order may be less than the $50 you need to buy to get free shipping and they then charge you shipping! They got me good when I ordered a years worth of wormer, but they were out of all but one $7 item and tried to charge $10 shipping. I was furious and said I think you need to tell the customer if something is not availableso wecan make new decisions. They were pretty rude.

Posted - Apr 18 2009 : 05:55:10 AM I use mainly Jeffers. I used Chick's for a couple of things but the order taker girl was a little too snippy for me. Jeffers alwys acts like they appreciate your biz. Also, check out Valley Vet, which I think changed it's name. You can look online at each store or have them send you a physical catalog. I have learned that it seems to me to stick with known equine stores, if you have a problem, they will resolve it and not disappear or ignore you.

Posted - Apr 17 2009 : 7:44:09 PM Hi, new here but I have been doing horses for a long time. I even ran a rescue ranch. I like Schneiders, Valley Vet, Jeffers, and Tractor Supply. You can even occasionally get stuff on your local Craig's List.

Posted - Apr 17 2009 : 08:17:49 AM I purchase these items at our local feed/farm store. Ours carry a nice selection and have occasion sales and will special order anything I want. I bought a new new winter blanket for one of my horses this year and it's a real dandy. Plus you're supporting a local business that employs local people. If you have any problems, you can walk the item back into the store and get it replaced too.
Hope you can find a nice store near you. Our feed store carries a wonderful line of products for horses...there are a ton of horses in our valley.
