I was planning on ordering some chicks from McMurray's hatchery, and on check out they have the option of both a vaccination for Marek's disease and coccidiosis. The chickens are being kept to lay eggs just for personal use on our farm. However, I still want to keep things as healthy and organic as I can. I also don't want to needlessly kill off half of the chicks with a bacteria if the vaccinations are necessary. The chicks will be arriving in August in Northeast Massachusetts. I would love to hear some thoughts on the subject.

Yea  I adopted 6 hens from a friend and those were debeaked against her wishes.
They do look kind of weird. Some of the hens were a bit more aggressive too. Perhaps making up for lack of a decent pointy sharp beak.
And most were very thin even though they were fed free choice/free range
I'll never declaw a cat ever again either. That's where knowing to much is TMI...akin to lopping off the first joint on each finger is what I was told. Other unpleasantries could also be said, for tail and ear docking, wattle dubbing and any castration done w/o some kind of sedation first. I know sometimes its not practical (pigs, bulls and the like) but it just makes me uncomfortable.
I'm still a farmgirl bit I think too much about the pain factor...too much empathy perhaps?

I order my chicks from Murry. I have them vaccinated. Have never not had it done so don't know if it makes a difference or not. We almost never loose a chick.
Jenny, when did you order your chicks? I ordered mine about 3 weeks ago and can't get them until June 15. At least I won't have to depend on the heat lamps except at night. |

OOOh..I was given some laying hens one time (grown) and they were brought over de-beaked. I felt so sorry for them. They looked freaky and had a hard time eating. Poor things.

Unless you are ordering more than 20...as in 50 or more I wouldn't bother
Have ordered chicks 3 times over now and have never vaccinated anything. I alwyas get batches of up to 15 but no more than 25
Same for the de-beaking offer. Guess this is done if there are going to be a lot of chicks in a very cramped area |

I always get my chicks vaccinated for Mareks. I order from McMurrays too. My new batch will be here on the week of the 27th.

From what I remember, you can have them vaccinate the chicks, I have their catalog and it says it stays within the realm of "organic".
I am like you though, I would think that it wouldn't, but I am just going by what I read. Maybe some other "Organic" FG"s should answer that question.
