Hi, my 12 year old daughter and I are finally going to get chickens.What is the best resource for us to learn about the care and keeping of chickens? We are excited about getting some girls. thanks, desiree

Hi Desiree. I think that is a wonderful mother daughter project. My son wanted them at that age too. We went to the library and they had a whole section on animals, and were able to find some about chicken breeds and care. You may want to check the library. Also, a few of the feed stores around here gave classes on poultry care. They were very educational, and the best part was they were free. |

All you really need to know is that chickens eat and poop a lot .
So make sure they have enough space so their cage/pen doesn't get muddy and poopy ! Haha. Anyways, how many chickens are you getting?
What breeds are they?

We got chicks last spring, which has been an immense source of bonding for me and my 14 year-old son. The feedstore were we ordered them actually had quite an in-depth pamphlet they handed out for free, so I'd suggest that as well as the above, which were also great for questions as they come up. Have fun - I think you'll love it!

Backyardchickens.com is a great site. There is also a board called Chickencrossing.org. Lots of helpful, nice people on there and tons of information. My babies are 3 weeks old and Icouldn'thave done it without help from those sites and the gals here :) Gppd luck and have fun. I'm having a blast with mine. I am so in love with those little fuzzballs!

Desiree, try looking for a book titled A Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow. It is a Storey Animal Handbook. I have written in the margins, underlined and highlighted several spots in mine. A good resource. I'm sure you and your daughter will fall "in love" with your chicks. My middle daughter and I got our first birds when she was 13, a perfect time. Have fun.

Desiree, I agree with Nancy, that is a great book.. Deerdawn on here works at a hatchery, she can answer any questions you have as well. Good Luck. Chickens are so fun to raise. BTW I used to live in North Bend Wa. just down the road from you....

I learned quite a bit about chickens at http://backyardchickens.yuku.com/ The other posters there are always super helpful in answering any questions you may have. Kind of like a MaryJanesFarm board for chickens!
Good luck with your chickens-I'm sure you will really enjoy them!
