Ok so I have my first hatch in the incubator on day 3. I thought it would be interesting to share my journey with my farmgirl sisters. I candled the eggs this morning and feel pretty good about them being fertile and growing nicely. Every time I candle I will share the pics! Here we go girls!!!! I hope you enjoy this just as much as I do.

Day 3

I will be candling again in 4 days. Stay tuned...

WOW, how exciting to hear all about your chicks. I am new to raising chickens, actually new to Farm sisterhood and thrilled to find such a wealth of sharing, does my new farm girl heart so much good. Thanks for all of it.

What are you grateful for?

HAHA! You have a Houdini! It won't be long before he can't get through the wire hopefully. I know what you mean about auctions. You just never know what they could have. Those are the very same reasons that I hope to be able to close my flock soon. Then I will know for sure there is no under lying condition I will have to treat.

Good luck with those babies. I hear you have lots right now. What are you going to do with all those boys?

They are cute, Christina. I hope you have better luck with these new hens. I had gotten some from an auction and a few were sick. I'll not do that again. And I do hope all the eggs hatch this time. I am really surprised all mine did. They are all doing great. I went out earlier and one was out of the wire but still in the hen house. So I put it back in.

Thanks Heather! My next batch is due Monday. I am really hoping for a better hatch this time. So fingers crossed. LOL

I moved the chicks outside in their chick run today. They are really loving it. I don't like to brood them too long. I feel they grow faster and healthier outside. jmo

My rescue white Leghorn roo, Foghorn (original I know), is doing great. He is opening his eye now and that's big considering a spur went through it. Well, I think it just clipped it, it was too swollen to tell, but I do know blood was coming from it when I was cleaning it up. He is such a sweet roo. All my ladies love him. He lets them lay under him and on top of him. I have never seen such a thing.

I go tomorrow to get a few hens. I can't wait to have fresh eggs and my very own hatching eggs from my very own flock. ANd also hens that I know will be healthy. Sheesh, the chickens I picked up a few weeks back have been nothing but work to get them healthy. I am however starting to see light at the end of the tunnel. They have 3 more days on Sulmet and then a round of Ivomec and then they are done for 3 months. Needless to say I will not be back to that breeder.

I hope all is well for all my farmgirls and have a great weekend!!!

Here they are. I lost one so I am down to three. They are just mutts but I think they are beautiful, but I'm a little bias...LOL.

This one has feathered feet so I think she is a cochin mix. I call her Taz.

Well girls~
She has arrived, and healthy!!! I did have to assist her hatching which I realized was really risky, but she had made no progress overnight and was quieting down, so I felt I had nothing to lose. So we named her Forrest, because she was so slow. I believe that she was positioned wierd in the shell which caused her to not be able to move her head around and pip around the shell like normal. I don't know for sure, just a guess.

So, we are all pretty happy here, she seems to be healthy, but very outgoing and loud, so she may be a he...in that case...I guess we just found our show rooster for 4-H!!! Thank you all for your support and encouragement and to Christina for starting this topic in the first place!!! I'll be in touch, still more babies to hatch next week!

Yes that's what it is. Thanks Heather.

The Aracona is the original EE. They lay a sky blue egg and are rumpless. Can you imagine a buttless chicken LOL. The Americauna has been croos-bred with the Aracona and have kept the "colored egg gene". The Aracona's only lay blue eggs never green. This link can tell you more.

Well my hatch is over and I have 4 fuzzy butts. They look to be Cochin mixes. They have the pom-pom tail. I will have pics soon.

My fingers are crossed for you Heather.

EE is short for "Easter Eggers" which is a nickname for the Ameracauna breed. These lay the colored eggs (green, blue). My little chick pipped yesterday but hasn't gotten far and is really slow. Keep your fingers crossed!

What are EE's? I have seen that name before but I cannot figure out what it stands for.

Gwen is beautiful!!!! I love EE's. I have 4 hatched and the others haven't moved. So I don't know. Hopefully it wasn't because the chicks were playing soccer with the eggs LOL! I will give them the weekend and see. I will take some good pics and show ya'll the new babies. Are you having a problem with the chicks drying stiff and not fluffy? I thought it was my humidity being too low so I raised it this time and still had to wash the chicks. I can't figure it out.

Good Luck!

Well,
I have one chick due to hatch today but I haven't seen any progress. Not a pip yet either. Yesterday I saw the egg wiggle and wobble a bit, but now today it is much quieter. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Maybe she's just slowing things down a bit so that my kids don't miss this hatch because they are in school.:) Love the babies Christina! I'll take some more of Gwen today so you all can see how fuzzy she is...she's starting to get her "grown up" wings and it's adorable!!!

That sounds like a great plan Kristin. I hope I don't have too much trouble when the time comes. I am thinking of a seperate run right beside the coop. So hopefully that will work.

I have a pip already!!!! I can hear it chirping and everything. Here we go again...LOL.

Here are the update pics of the chicks. You know me, I am picture crazy :)

This is Twizzle.

This is Nugget. I believe them both to be Light Brahmas.

This last one I did not hatch and is about 2 weeks old. This is a Mille Fluer D'uccle. I call her Millie and the kids call her Monster Feet Millie for obvious reasons. I just think her feet are hilarious. The 2 chicks above will have feet like this too.
What do you think of this one?/?/

Hopefully I will have something to show ya'll this weekend :) Fingers crossed!!

Christina, I am going to put chicken wire up in half the hen house for the momma and babes for awhile. Then they will be old enuf to go out with momma. And she will protect them as best as she can. They can be awfully mean mommas. 5 more days! I have to get busy.

That's great Heather! Mine are due Friday too!!!

Kris, don't forget pics please. I think it's so cute watching a momma hen with her chickies. Do you have them seperated? Will the mom protect them from other chickens? Just wondering how good they are at that.

Thanks everyone for all your warm comments and following along. This has been so much fun.

Hello all~
Thanks for all the awesome comments. She's still a little wobbly but appears to be doing fine. Her name is "Gwen". Hopefully she is a Gwen not a Glen. :)LOL!!! Good luck to you all on your ventures...I'll be back to inform how the next hatch goes on Fri.

Heather, it looks like a little tourtous shell kitten. So cute. We have 7 more days to go on the hen setting on the eggs. I'm just going to let her raise them. I have 15 Buffs coming on the 24th. So I'll have my hands full with all them plus some other kinds, too. Have fun with yours. They are all so cute. Gotta love those baby chicks!

Must be something in the water ;) I will get some good update pics this week of my little ones. They turned out to be bantams, so tiny. Fingers crossed for the next due.
