Hi everyone. We are going to be getting some sheep and am looking for info on them. We have an idea on raising but can always use helpful hints. They belong to my grandson but he has to get rid of them to make room for other animals so these will not be lamb chops, these 4 anyway. How much does wool go for and anything else would be helpful.
Thank you!!!!!
Rae

I have never spun before but that is something I plan to learn as soon as we get the sheep. My grandson has them until we get fence up IF it ever quits snowing here and thaws out ;-)

Rae, do you spin? I love Romney fiber - you must learn to spin and outfit your family with sweaters! :)

We raise Romneys and they are a wonderful breed of sheep. Handspinners like their wool to spin and there is a definite market for it. Generally you get more for your wool the cleaner it is - free of contamination from hay and other vegetable matter. When you shear them make sure you skirt the fleeces right away ie. remove the dirty dung tags etc. The fresher the fleece is the better so try to sell them soon after shearing. You might want to invite people to a shearing day and have them buy a fresh fleece right off the sheep. Depending on where you live there may be a festival or fair that you could enter the fleeces in for both competition and sale and that is a good way to see how your fleeces compare to other farms' fleeces as well as to sell fleeces. Wool is generally sold by the pound so you will want to weigh the fleeces before you price them. Romneys are long stapled and generally have a heavy fleece of 10 lbs. or more. Good luck and let us know how you do! Sara

You can find it under this "Barnyard Buddies". It is a big one but if you can not find it I will pull it back on the front page.

Congrat's Rae

We have a long thread about that under "All things Sheep and Goat" I would suggest start there and then come back with questions.
We are glad to help

My grandson said they are Romney. There are 2 males and 2 females. Billy and Nellie are babies from Sampson and Sally. These 4 will never be on some ones table :-)
Thanks for any info.

Hi Rae:
What breed are the sheep? All ewes? Or do you plan to breed them?

Wool price will depend on the quality/breed of sheep you have. Have fun being sheepified. It's addicting!
