can I expect to never be able to leave the farm?
I'd like to have chickens, and a few sheep and a miniature cow...however I also want to be able to go camping with my family and travel (once a year)... are these things possible when you have farm animals? Do you find there are lots of things that can not be done because someone has to be there?
How easy or difficult is it to find someone to take care of the animals when you are gone?

Two words...automatic feeders. They have saved my cabin fever self so many times.

This is all good to know.
My closest family lives a 2 hour drive away and I had visions of not being able to visit at the rate we do now, once a month, leaving at dawn back well after dark. We have small kids so it's not like we travel a lot...but we love camping and I hated the thought of my hubby going off with the kids without me.
I don't know any farm people right now... we're all military around here, but once we get settled at our farm I am sure I will find someone.

When we leave for a few days, we just have a neighbor watch over things for us. I'm lucky enough to have a sister down the road who can milk for me if needed, also. As Sandra said, it's a good investment to 'train' a teenager to do the farm chores for you!

I am training 2 responsible teens from our town to help out here- they will stay at our house for the few times we are gone- we also have neighbors- but I like the idea of teaching someone a skill they can use later in life

luckily i work on a farm with other "animal people" so its not impossible to find someone to look after all the beasts. i do try to make it easy for whoever is going to watch the animals, either they can stay in the house with free food, or we take them out to dinner afterwards. also i never go away when i have baby calves or a cow due in heat. look for farm-sitting flyers at local grain stores, i dog/horse/house watched alot when i was growing up and i'm sure there are plenty of people that would enjoy playing farmer for a week/weekend. |

I am so lucky to have a friend that loves animals and will look after our farm when I go out of town. She usually just stays at our farm. I board her horse there. Hopefully, you can think of a friend that you would trust your animals with.

Tracy, when I am not milking goats I can leave for a few days and the animals are fine. I just make sure they have plenty of water and hay. I have a neighbor across the road that will check on them to make sure everything's ok. But when I am milking 5 goats it's hard to find someone to do all that.
But with just chickens and a cow or sheep, they're ok a few days on their own. Or get a friend or neighbor to check on them.
I would make sure that you do have someone first, just to know you're covered.
