Hi all, my roo is sick (Brahma, nearly a year old). I've been on the poultry boards all week trying to get help. Someone suggested Tylan 50, at .5 mls, but they take a long time to respond and they never said how often or for how long. Has anyone ever given this injection before? Do you know how often and how long I should give it?
I noticed Sunday night he was a little wheezy, but it was late and I wasn't sure if he was just hissing at me (he does that.) The next morning though he sounded very wheezy and was a little unsteady on his feet and couldn't crow. I've been giving him the rickets diet they recommended to help him fight it and put multi-vits and poultry booster in his food. I also put Duramycin (I think that's the name) in the water. He seems to be better now...crowing up a storm and strong enough to attack me whenever I change his bedding or feed him. But I still hear him breathing so I'm thinking he's still sick. No other symptoms, no swollen head, watery eyes, nasal discharge. He sneezes sometimes. otherwise he seems just fine.

I sure hope your rooster gets better. Make sure you keep him separated from the others til he is. If it's a resparatory infection, all the others could get it, too.
I just went through all this a few weeks ago with some chickens I got from the auction. We had to put one down after a week. The others are just fine now. I gave them neomyacin and electrolytes.

I did mean that if it were hens, I wouldnt use the eggs for 3 weeks. Hmmm...I'd probably cull (separate) him for a couple of weeks til he's feeling better. You MIGHT be able to get Daily 72 or something like that at TSC, I work at a hatchery so i'm a little spoiled. Whatever i need is right here for the asking. Vitamin A is usually found compounded with D and E, since both of those make the absorption of A easier. However, in my experience, I've had great success doing a strong solution of the vita-pack. If it calls for 1/4 tsp oer gallon, do a 1/2 tsp per gallon for a day or two. You dont wanna overdose, so try it for 2-3 days only. You can give him poly vi sol. You can find it in walmart with the childrens vitamins.

Dawn, it's a rooster though...do you mean if I was giving Tylan to my hens I couldn't use the eggs? You don't mean because he'll be in with the hens that we shouldn't eat the eggs do you? I'm giving a vit/electolyte supplement...where do you get vit a for poultry? Would that be at Tractor Supply?

I've never heard of Tylan as an injectable. Usually that stuff will wipe anything out. You should be aware that you should not use the eggs for 3-4 weeks after dosing with Tylan. Respitory can be a vitamin deficiency as well. Try boosting them with a vitamin/electrolyte solution and a little bit of vitamin a. Make sure he's warm, and not crowded. You make have to disinfect the coop with a 1/10 bleach solution if its bacterial. Good Luck.
