I thought I was tired of taking care of animals...sold all of my goats 4 years ago,,then,......... the next door neighbors gave us 15 roosters(for the stewpot), and now I have that old "Farmgirl get to it" again....does that ever go away?
I really do hope not, I am still a Farmgirl at heart....and really am glad it has not gone away...It's something wayyyyy down inside......
Does anyone else have it?

Jami I so know what you mean - I get so tired of doing the "business" work - give me mucking out the barns, doing all the farm work, sitting in front of the spinning wheel all day or dye pots but I just get too tired of the hunt for feed, having feed prices go thru the roof and customers not keeping up with the cost of making ends meet. I wish I did not have to do that part of the farm... I too understand that this is part of the package but it seems like in today's economy it get's overwhelming.

I also think folk's don't get it when we do lose a animal - my heart just breaks and when I think of each one who has left the planet I too cry buckets of tears. I have sat with an animal who has taken days to pass and folks just do not get it - I would never leave them during that time. I have had folks say "It's just a sheep, or "you have other dogs". I gasp and then shake my head. I say to them "When you pass I hope your spouse doesn't say - It was just my spouse, or I will go get another one - there are plenty out there." No wonder I take animals over people...

Honestly, it hurts me down to my very SOUL to imagine my life without my animals. A few years ago there was a big family STINK about all my critters (we live on the FAMILY farm and some of the family members were squawking about it) and I was told my animals were a problem. Of course I started to cry, but then, from somewhere deep down inside of me these soul wrenching SOBS just poured out of me. It was like a dear family member had died! I could NOT make them stop and I hadn't cried like that since my parents died.

My husband must have said something to his family about my reaction because nothing has ever been said about it since. In fact, my mother-in-law is always saying "You REALLY love your animals don't you? My dad was like that with his cows." People who don't like animals can never imagine the bond that developes. Like Grace said, they run to us in times of need and sometimes just to comfort US!

Recently we had to butcher one of my rams. The day before we said good-bye, he came up to me and rubbed his head on my leg and stared up at me as if to say "Momma, I don't feel so well" It was sad to lose him, but I knew he was suffering and he would have died a horribly painful death had he been allowed to linger. To have him seek out MY comfort in those last hours was a blessing and PROOF that animals do have emotions similar to our own. They are SUCH a blessing to those of us who really appreciate and understand them. So, I guess what I'm saying is "No". That feeling never goes away. It's something we're either born with, or we're not. Thank God I was born with it! ~~Tracy

Every year I contemplate liquidating the flock...every single year! It's for a variety of reasons...probably all what is mentioned in this post and more. I really tire of the marketing end of things in the sheep business. It just tires me out. And fighting the weather too trying to keep them alive and fed when there's a drought or blizzard during lambing.

But I would be lost without the chaos and critters and chores too! Guess that's the same kind of thing you're about, Terri.

Terri, I can tell you it never goes away. We sold our first farm several years ago. We moved into a really nice Neighborhood. Our house was wonderful, but it couldn't replace the feeling of having a farm. We both missed our farm so much, we sold our home and bought more land and built another house and barn. It comes from deep down inside you. It is what I dreamed as a little girl.

Oh that poor baby. I hope she's ok. Your Esmeralda sounds like my Abby goat. She is constantly head butting all the others. And usually in the stimach and they're all pregnant, too. I get so mad at her. But if she wasn't around it would be someone else. It hurts me when one of mine are hurt.

I with you gals - everytime there is a horrible storm, a critically ill animal or God forbid someone passes I want to be done with it all. Then one of my sweet ones comes up to me and leans on me and my heart just melts. There is nothing better then sitting in the chicken coop and sitting with the gals as they lay their eggs and they come running to me and hop in my lap to tell me all about it. Better yet, the other day after my nasty goat Esmeralda plowed my bottle girl from last year into the side of the barn and cracked her horn - all the goat girls came running to get me. There stood Mishka with the right side of her face covered in blood. I ran in picked her up in my arms, carried her to the sick room and cleaned her up. After applying blood stop and vet wrap that sweet one give me a soft nussle and laid in my lap like she did when she was just days old. There I sat in the barn for hours talking with her, petting her brow and next to me sat my Great Pry "Chief" as he licked her ear with love. You just can not give that up - it is in our soul....

Oh yeah. Sometimes I want to get rid of every single animal on this farm. But then I think how in the world would I live without all these critters around. It would be awful. I know I sure did miss chickens. And now that I have some more, I love it.

I sure hope that if I get to be an "old" lady, I still have some kind of farm animal to take care of.
