I've been thinking of getting some rabbits this year and recall one of my friends describing this rabbit pen to me a number of years ago. It seems that it was an enclosed pen much like a chicken coop with a cover over the top to keep the rain out. Straw bails were just sitting pallets on the ground and apparently the rabbits made homes/nests inside the bails.........?
Makes sense since rabbits are real chewers and diggers. Also they'll use a certain spot to leave their "little raisins" LOL.....Anyway, has anyone ever heard or seen rabbits being kept that way? I'd be interested in trying it...it would certainly allow lots of freedom for them.

Suzi, sounds like you know what you're doing and I'll bet you have very happy rabbits!
I think I'll try making a rabbit "pen" like the one that was described to me...especially now that you mentioned that your rabbits burrow inside the straw! Makes total sense. Thanks

I've never heard of just putting in the haybales, but this winter I packed the outside part of my hutch with straw as insulation & my rabbits promptly burrowed & made all kinds of tunnels & hide aways with in the straw. They also chew on the straw, sometimes they look like they are smoking a cigar when I go out to feed them.
And mine have a shavings filled litter box to use, then I just dump out the old as mulch/fertilizer on my plants.

"Bunny beans" ....... that's funny I wonder how many other names we can come up with for bunny poop! LOL We should post another topic and have a vote on the best name! Hey, we could give away a prize of chocolate covered raisins!

I had to laugh when I was reading this - we have 2 dwarf mixed breed bunnies and we refer to their "output" as bunny beans! LOL
Anyway, I searched online and did not find any photos but I'm sure there has to be somewhere that would have plans. Have you tried the Storey's book about raising rabbits?

I never saw the setup for myself, but I did know a lady that built something like that. If I remember correctly, she has to dig out a certain amount of soil and lay concrete or hard plastic or maybe even chain link fence so that if the rabbits did burrow, they would not be able to go past the fence and so they were still fenced in even under ground.

Hi, MariaAZ.........THANK YOU for your reply! The problem is that I've never personally seen this set up myself so if you have more information please let me know. It seems to me that there must be alternative ways of raising rabbits (if you have the room) other than the small cages that I just don't want to deal with.

Sounds like you are describing what is called a colony set-up. Basically, it's a large dig-out-proof enclosure for housing multiple rabbits and that offers enough room for the bunnies to get out of each others' ways.

Cheryl, hey thanks for the info but I already know about conventional hutches (I've also had rabbits in the past). My question is "has anyone ever heard of a seen a set-up like the one I described?"

Carol I raised rabbit in Yakima when my kids were young. You need a screened in hutch, and their "poopie" drops through the bottom screen. Good fertilizer. and a nest box & a cover. wont need more than one buck!
