We are supposed to get our new chick shipmant tomorrow or Wednesday.
Tomorrow wouod be great: brooder is all set and ready to go.
Only problem is the temps for tonight and especially tomorrow.
Chicks are coming from the Randall Burkey Co. in Texas. Lets hope they are packed like sardines and are warm enough. Figures NC is in the middle of a temporary deep freeze.
This shipment will include the 1 dark brahma, the sex links, and the standard and bantam cochins. I'm all excited for the new breeds.
And now that I'm a little more tech savvy, maybe THIS time i can post a pik or two. |

I have heard that you should turn off the light for a few minutes every day to get them used to dark in the even the electricity goes out. Is someone pulling my leg.....

So far so good.
24 hours later and all are thriving.
And yes, included with the 14 that were ordered, 11 more were added for warmth. Making the grand total to 24.
I know these extras are the little roos. So I'll be responsable and raise them accordingly, then perhaps take them for butchering.
I'm kind of curious to see what kind they are.
Figured out that if I put the camera flash on regular, it negates the red glare for the brooder lamp, so better pix come out. It's still difficult taking a photo of tiny little thngs that don't stay still for very long!
Tried holding a few individuals and got good pix of my arm and hand. You gotta love the digital age for instant gratification |

Anna, glad your chicks arrived. I'll really be ready when we finally order ours. To save some work (hopefully) we are going to wait until the weather is warmer. We usually put our babies in a stock tank in the potting shed than move them to a seperate pen in the chicken yard. This year, we are going to wait till about May 1 and put them straight in their little house. Will still use the heat lamps, especially at night. But with a little protection, I think it will work better for us humans. Problem with that is we won't get eggs until Nov instead of Sept.

WE GOT CHICKS!!
got the call at 6 this a.m. and all is well.
Only lost 1 in shipping. Probaby from being stepped on.
The brahma did survive, i think one of the cochin bantams did not
All are eating/drnking now and will probably pass out in a while. It'sso funny to see chicks that look like they have been steamrolled when they sleep.
I think they included a few chicks for warmth..
i have been standing outside watching and cuddling, and my feet are freezing! i'm wearing coveralls, but the brooder area is in a building that has a concrete floor.
May have to spread a layer of shavings to keep my tootsies warm.

No chicks as of this a.m.
That's just as well. It's been freezing here all day. I had secretly hope they wouold have been here though...for hubby;s birthday. ha ha
Hopefully tomorrow.
I have just 1 buff orp hen and that rooster that was given to us a few weeks ago. He is WELL integrated. This hen is one of my favorites. So even though she may not be producing eggs anymore, I'll keep her for for lovability factor. She is the best.
I'll still not give up on the blue orps either. Figured the blue cochins will be a decent substitute 'till then.
Happy to know i'm also not the only one who has a fun time trying to decode on the new breed of the year. I love getting new chicks :)))) |

Buff orpingtons are the best.. most gentle, and cold weather hardy , I only have two but will be getting more..Friday.. they have laid all winter without stop. I love my golden girls..Goldie & Lucille..Rene' your chickie is adorable. Gail & I are going tomorrow to get us some more..

I am going to order my chicks from our local hatchery here in Idaho. I am putting them in a metal horse feeder which I bought to use as a swimming pool in the summer. I am going to keep them in the garage with their heat lamp on them. Rene, your chicky is so cute, I cant wait to get mine......

Sounds like fun, Anna. I hope it gets warmer soon. It's freezing cold here. I can't even go outside. I feel so sorry for my animals out there. I want to get chicks, too, but I will wait a few more weeks til it warms up. Hopefully it will soon.
