My little BR chicken is sick. I looked on the Backyard Chicken forum last night and someone had to bring their chicken in the house to keep her warm. So I went out and got mine. I had to put her in a cage by herself away from the others to keep them from getting sick, too. And she looked so cold. So I got a box with some hay in it and put her by the fireplace. She sounded awful last night. I really thought she'd be dead by morning. But she actually looked a little better. She's still wheezy but she's eating and drinking. Standing tall, not all scrunched up like last night.

So I'll see how she does. She's such a little sweetie. I hope she makes it. If anyone has any holistic remedies, I'd love to know. I hate to give her chemicals and will try anything now. I think I'll give her a little homemade buttermilk. That will help her immune system.

Kris, Sorry to hear all thats going on with your chicks. Just wanted to say that yes, you can bring dieseases to your coop from walking in other coops and especially where sickness has been. I just read that in one of my chick books. I did'nt know that before. Hope your other babies make it.

Kris, I'm sorry about your wee chicken, but I'm sure it was for the best. Bless your hubby's heart. I hate to hear about disease like that in your auction, but I've heard that a lot so I guess it's pretty common. So sad.

I just called and talked to the auctioeer. He said they have a sign up front that clearly states once you buy and animal it's yours. I said I know that, I just wanted you to know that there are sick animals being brought there to sell and is there no way you can keep that from happening? I told him I just wanted them to know what happened to me and didn't want someone else to go through this, too. But he acted like he just didn't care at all. So I tried. I just won't go back there. Too much disease going aroung in places like that.

I will call them tomorrow when they will be there. I am afraid to go there because I may be carrying germs on my shoes from that place. I was talking to Kelly today and she said she heard bad things about that place. So I will not be going there again. But I will call in the morning. They will know who it was that brought the chickens, too.

The other 2 are much better, but I will wait another week to put them out with the others just to make sure. In the meantime I will continue giving them the antibiotic and electrolytes.

So sorry about your little chickie. She knew you cared and loved her. Good job for trying so hard to make her comfortable and keep her going.

I am sorry about the little girl. I hope the others were just cold. Have you contacted the auction barn yet?

Sorry to hear about your sick one. It is probably for the best - poor thing.

Sounds like you are on top of things with the other two. Maybe they just needed some warmth and TLC.

Well, this morning my husband went ahead and put her down. She just coughed and sneezed all night. It was so pitiful, poor thing. So I think that was the best thing to do for her.

There are 2 more that I have in the "infermary" since yesterday. I went out to feed them and they both let me pick them up. I think they were just a little too cold. I held them close and they both closed their eyes and rested. So I put them in together and am loading them up with neomyacin and electrolytes. Plus lots of chick starter. They seem to be ok, but will make sure before I put them back out.

Thanks for all your prayers for the chick. I really do appreciate the concern.

Kris

K-Falls Farmgirl Posted - Feb 21 2009 : 7:27:43 PM
Three are laying . Two every day. From the golden girls..Dottie is every two -three and Rosie well she eats, poops. Weather has been cold, although we did have a 53 degree day this week. Rain expected for the next few days. Theyare cozy in their studio & covered play yard.. I think its just not warm enough yet for constistency from those two. We are thinking of getting a couple more & a Rooster.. The neighbor lady asked me today if she could buy eggs fromus.. I would love that but ned more eggs right now.. so we shall see what happens. Thanks for the update on your chickie.. I agree its hard to do but perhaps the best to put her down..

Hey Cheryl, she's in the living room still and is coughing and sneezing. It sounds so human. I think we are going to have to put her down. It's been a week now and no sign of improving much. She will have a good day but nights are awful for her. So I think the best thing would be to end this. I just hate to see her suffer any more.

Thanks for asking. The others are fine. I let them out a few days ago. The guinneas kind of bothered them at first but all has settled down out there. Russell still sleeps on the fence and the guinneas are up in the tree over the hen house. He does hang out with the girls some, but he's not all that into them right now. Maybe he can sense they are a little too young yet? He is being a gentleman, though. Such a good boy. I just love that roo.

How are your girls. Still laying good? I hope the weather is good there.

Oh! Poor Thing!!!!!!!!!!!
When she starts to get really bad and is suffering put gatorade, apple cider, or "some" suger drink in her water..suger helps them get energy, and apple cider rises up their immune system!
I'm prayin'
Hope It works!

Hey Kelly, I just e-mailed you. And the chicken is still sick. I joined the Backyard Poultry forum and someone said she may not get better and if she did, she may be a carrier of whatever she has and get the others sick, too. So I am at a loss as to what to do. My husband hates having to kill animals, but if she's suffering he will. She looks ok right now and is still eating and drinking. I just don't know what will happen to her. And it's just too cold to put her outside.

It really makes me mad that people will take sick chickens to an auction knowing they are sick and that someone will buy them that probably has more chickens and infect the whole flock. I think I might call the auction place and tell them. I know people sell the culls and that they are all less than perfect, but still, they don't need to bring sick animals to a public place like that. Also the stress factor is so high at a place like that, too. They are thrown around and kicked and hit and shoved around. It's not a nice place to be if you're an animal, for sure.

She's still sick. I don't know if she'll make it. I sure hate to see her suffer. She may be about 4 months old. Younger and smaller than the other 4. They are all fine. And I got 4 more hens Sunday afternoon. They are really healthy birds.

So I still have her in the house and she's wheezing and just sounds like she has a bad cold and sore throat. Poor thing. I gave her neomyacin in her water. She's eating and drinking. Poop looks normal, not runny. I just don't know how long I should try to keep her going. Any advice for me?

Thank you all for your chickie prayers.

Hey Meg, I do that alot with all my critters at least once a month. They all love it, too. Thanks.

Well hello there, Kelly. I was wondering where you've been. I thought you'd been busy with your new house. Are you in yet? And if your friend has extra chickens she's getting rid of, let me know. I need some more already! The ones I just got are not old enough to lay just yet. That is exiting to have your own flock of hens.

Yes we need to get together soon. I miss you, too. See ya soon.

My little Chickie Lou Lou (I just named her that) is still not over the hump yet. It may take days to get her well. Or she may not get through this at all. I think being away from the other bigger chicks might help her get over this. If ya'll believe in prayer for our critters, she needs some.

Kris, Baby chicks, I'm sooo jealous, we will be working on getting a coop ready soon, and will place an order with a friend to get some hens, I am so excited to have my own brood. I can't wait to see your new babies. We need to get together again real soon!!! Glad to read that hubby is doing better. (I read about the hay unloading somewhere).
Miss ya girl!

I've heard that putting a little apple cider vinegar in the water helps, I've also heard crushed garlic too.

Hope she feels better soon!
