We lost one of little white hens today. Not sure why????? It has been so cold lately, I hope she didn't get a draft and got sick. Does anyone else out there get attached to the silly birds?

I'm sorry for your loss, and know how sad you must feel. I'm another animal lover, who gets wayyyyy too attached. When I lived on a farm, I named every one of my hens & roosters. One Rhode Island Red hen was my favorite. I named her Maggie and she had the sweetest personality. Every evening as my husband and I would sit on the porch swing, she'd jump up beside us and enjoy our company. As with every pet, I have lost, I cried when she died. I always buried my pets in a certain special location overlooking our woods, but didn't really have funerals for them.

I like the idea of the special bread. I think I'll do that for them. Chickens are such social animals that I think they must be affected when they lose one of their "family." Maybe not, though. One of the questions I will ask when I talk to the one who knows all.

I am so sorry for your loss - I too lost one of my white hens in the middle of December. I could not believe the bucket of tears that I cried. The hens where also as upset as I was - I was worried they might go too. I baked a special bread just for them and we sat out in the coop together until the load was gone and we said our fair wells.. My heart is with you - silly how attached we can become to those feathered friends.

Sherone- I am so sorry about your little hen. I get very attached to my animals, especially the hens. Who wouldn't, what with their hilarious antics and sweet little personalities? You must miss her a lot.

Thanks, girls. I didn't think I would miss her that bad, but she is missing when I go in coop. It just seems weird. I didn't have a funeral (too silly). She was buried next to Hank, the poodle cow dog. We lost him a couple of years ago. If I keep this up, we are going to have quite the pet cemetary. :o)

<<hugs>> So sorry to hear of your loss. I tend to get too attached to my critters, which isn't good, especially when they're livestock and meant for the freezer. It's hard sometimes to not get attached, especially since we watch them grow up and learn their individual personalities.

I get attached to all my chickens. But I've kind of gotten used to loosing a hen now and then. So far I haven't lost any to other animals, just natural deathes. Right now I have one living in the dining room. One of the younger hens was getting after her really bad. So Black Betty will be a "house chicken" for a few days, then I'll return her to the coop and hope the ornery one has settled down and leaves her alone.

I don't have a funeral but I do bury all of them. My FIL refers to me as the crazy chicken lady!

Take care, Melissa.

I'm so sorry. I do get upset when I lose my animals. For whatever reason, it's sad. But that's life on a farm. Things are going to happen. I've sort of gotten used to it now.

Do you have funerals for your chickens?

Well sherone, I get awfully attached to any kind of animal! Last week our neighbors dog killed our two RIR hens, now we just have one barred rock hen, and she has quit laying...I was really upset about the hens, especially concidering the circumstances (long story about the dog)...We are especially attached to our turkey, and that's probably because she is so human acting. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, there are lots of us out there that get attached, I think it's normal.....Kelley
