I went out to the henhouse this morning, and one of my hens have somehow managed to find and swallow a feed bag string. It is twine, not nylon. Is there anything to be done? Does anybody know?

If you find the string in an egg, please post a photo. I've got to see that. Maybe it will be like that Shirley Temple movie and the hen will hatch chicks in little sweaters. :0)

That is some reassuring news...
I'm going to examine my eggs very closely for the next couple of weeks! If I find remmants of twine...that egg will be cooked for the pups! Yuck.

We have had this happen with our dogs too! Gross. Actually, the vet told us to cut the string where we see it because if it is attached to something internal on the animal, we could pull entrails out! How gross, huh? Our chickens have eaten all manner of things and somehow survive! :)

watch the poop! Keep looking at the bum (s) to see if the twine is coming out and then gently pull it the rest of the way out.... Ask me how I know!!! I also had to do this with a dog.... ewwww!

Well, I went out to feed this morning, and with trepidation I looked around...fully expecting the demise of the hen...but I can't tell which one had swallowed the string. There is absolutely NO sign of anything...so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. And as an additional bonus...a half dozen eggs awaited me! We've had some sunshine and pleasant weather, so the girls are happy*

Don't give up on the hen just yet. My horse ate a whole plastic grocery bag once that had apples in it--ate the apples and the bag both and I thought he would surely die...I ran and tried to get it out of his mouth as he was ingesting it but bloop, it was already down the hatch. He was fine and you know...I never did find the sack in his droppings so it's a plain mystery but he's 26 years old next month and this was about 9 years ago it happened.

Best think to do with chickens is NOT watch what they eat. They are true scavengers. MB

Poor chicken. It's happened here before. Pigs and cows and goats, too. Sometimes they'll get the hay bale twine, too. You just can't keep it all out of their reach. I have never lost any to this before, though. Thank goodness it's string, not nylon. Is she still eating and looking normal?
Hopefully she'll be ok in the morning.
