Posted - Dec 11 2008 : 06:37:47 AM Wow, our silkies just started laying and the eggs are so teeny! Very cute! Appropriate since we got the silkies just for their "cuteness factor" as my husband says. Compared to our regular layers (barred rock, rhode island reds, etc) these eggs are about 1/3 the size! |

Posted - Dec 18 2008 : 06:16:06 AM on second thought, maybe the males aren't quite as "beefy" as the layers, but their fluffiness threw me off on my estimate :) so yes, they're smaller!! |

Posted - Dec 18 2008 : 06:14:54 AM They're very cute, not as small as some, well the girls are, but the roosters are about the size of our regular layer hens. And Beverly, I'd guess Meyer is online, but they also have a really nice catalog too. . .actually someone on this forum (Dawn something--DawnDeer or something like that) works there--ask her and she could give you the info I'm sure. We ordered our meat chickens from there as well (so that we could order a smaller amount of silkies and get the lower shipping) |

Posted - Dec 17 2008 : 4:00:05 PM I was just reading the article in M.E. about how anyone can raise chickens and they talked about how good the silkies are to go broody and what good mothers they are. I think I may have to get some of them next time.
How big are they? Like the little bantys?

Posted - Dec 17 2008 : 10:44:14 AM We got ours from Meyer hatchery, the first time ever ordering from them, and we've been pleased with them. . .although of the 6 that we got, only 2 are girls! (they were straight run) |

Posted - Dec 16 2008 : 9:31:00 PM Where did you get your silkies from? In the spring I am going to look for a few more different kinds of chickens. I only have black astrolorps right now but would like a variety.

Posted - Dec 11 2008 : 08:01:38 AM Don't you just loooove those adorable fluff balls? And they are GREAT broody hens for ANY bird species! If your other birds won't set (which I KNOW the Reds will), you can just pop the eggs you want incubated (if you have a rooster too that is!) under the broody hens. They're EXCELLENT mothers and there is nothing funnier than seeing this little mom with all these different sized (and sometimes different SPECIES) babies following her around and trying to tuck them up under her wings. Have fun with them Sheila!
