Posted - Nov 09 2008 : 2:12:44 PM On our alpaca farm, we have such hot summers that we have to sit out birthing during the summer and start up again in the Fall. Since alpacas gestate for 11-12 months, it's a long wait.
We finally are back to having babies again, so I had to share this new arrival! Bella had a grey baby boy yesterday. He's so big and strong and handsome. I've named him Eisenheim (after the character in the movie, The Illusionist.)
I've posted pictures of him and there's a debate going over his name on my blog. www.alpacafarmgirl.com
Thanks for letting me share my good news, farmgirls! Yippeee!~Katy

Posted - Nov 10 2008 : 06:38:40 AM Thanks Country Lawyer and Diana! We have a herd (yep, they are herds) of around 60 on the farm. We board some, and own about 50 alpacas. I am definitely proud of hubby's art!

Posted - Nov 09 2008 : 4:22:56 PM wow that would be tricky to find a name that hasn't been used before in the Alpaca registry..yikes. I'm sure you'll find a name that suits his personality to a T though. good luck.

Posted - Nov 09 2008 : 3:59:54 PM Thanks Monica and Kris! I think we have 8 more due this year. With one due on Thanksgiving and one due on Christmas. Of course they NEVER come on their due dates so I'm probably safe. I'm always home for the holidays anyway. We have one girl who was ultrasounded pregnant but doesn't look like she could possibly have a baby this month. So I don't know my count for sure. Plus I have one due on December 29th so she may well go into January...
We'll let this little guy's new owner change his name if they like. We have to find a name that hasn't been used before in the Alpaca Registry. That is often tricky to find.
Funny you mention Moonbeam. We have a Moonshadow here now. I have a friend who names everything either "Rose" related or "Moon" related. I have had so many Lunas and Rosas from her with every variation that I can't keep them straight. One year we had a "Phil" (Philosophy) and a "Phillipe".
So fun to get to name creatures! :) Katy

Posted - Nov 09 2008 : 3:23:19 PM when I saw your new little baby cria I thought "oh what a pretty "Moonbeam"(after I read his mom's name and dad's name) I'm not sure about the other name..its quite the mouthfull and not sure most folks would like it or even know how to pronounce it, and if you wind up selling him for someone to use in show ring its quite a mouthfull for someone to say..but otherwise..congrats on the little guy..he's really adorable!

Posted - Nov 09 2008 : 3:05:25 PM Congratultions, Katy. How many more are due? It sure is a nerve wracking time, isn't it? Waiting on animal babies is sometimes worse than people babies.
Good luck, Kris |
