Yep...first thing this morning she delived a big bull calf. He is beautiful and weighs at least 100 lb. He is up and walking and nursing already and Mona is doing great. And ON her due date. Wonderful to have that past us. I will start milking tonight! We will call him BOO until my little granddaughter Kayla picks his name. I promised her that "honor" this year. He will go to his new home in a couple weeks but we get to spoil and enjoy him in the meantime. Looks like he will be going to a good farmgirl home..over to Kate (Katiedid) here in town. So...we will get visitation rights even after he leaves.
My camera batteries wore out today (of ALL days!!) so I need to get new ones when I go to the store in a few minutes...will post pictures on my blog a little later on today.

Jami...yep...that is the main reason...also space in our situation..no room for two cows. They grow quickly and are harder to move for us as they get older. Girls get to stay alot longer with Mom...heifer calves are worth about 4 times what bull calves are. Unfortunate but true that female animals are sure preferred. Also...the longer the calf is here the more he and Mona would be bonded and the harder it is on her when he is gone. If I had the space I would keep him for sure. So far her calves have all gone to great homes. Our Libbie has her heifer calf from last year, Evelyn, so I get to visit her. The boys of course don't get a LONNNNG life, but they do go to families and get to be loved and taken care of for their life.
Kate, the gal getting the calf will be getting milk from us for the calf at first. I am going to save the colostrum/milk from this week before we are drinking it for her too. We will freeze it in gallon jugs so she can continue to keep him on milk for awhile before using milk replacer. She will bottle feed him until he is 3 months or so.

Jenny, congrats to Mona and yourself! Nice looking calf. Can I ask how it works...why you take him away so early? Not enough milk for you with the calf on her too? I don't know much about this.

Got home from the funeral and luncheon after and got a call from my sweet grand daughter....the calf's official name is Jack. (as in Jack-o-lantern she informed me)
So he is Boo no longer.
Mona is doing great with milking...3rd milking tonight went just fine and the calf is healthy and perky. I could watch them all day long.

I promised my little Granddaughter Kayla that she could name the calf this year. We are calling him Boo for now. She is supposed to call this afternoon and let me know.
