Just wanted to share a usda.gov site that is offering materials on keeping your chickens safe & disease free. Included in the information is a 2009 chicken calendar with lots of tips for caring for your flock. And its FREE!

Here's the website: http://healthybirds.aphis.usda.gov. Click on order materials and you can pick and choose those things that might help your family farm. There is even a coloring books for children.

its NAIS - national animal identy system that the government is trying to get animal owners
to do. This came about since the mad cow disease - everyone is supposed to keep track of
every single animal they own, keep track of who they sell their animals to, etc, etc. So the
government can track down problems in the event there is one. There has been quite a bit
of resistance....many think its to burden the little guy owners, so only the big guy owners
can have the whole market - you want egss, buy it from the big guy, make it too expensive to
have your own, or sell a few on the side. Some states it is a law now, other states its voluntary.

I'm with you, Beverly. What with the push for NAIA (that is the right letters, isn't it?) - you never know.

maybe I am a bit skeptical but maybe they are just trying to find out who owns chickens and where they are? I guess i am not trusting!!!
