One of my inside/outside (mostly inside) cats was diagnosed last week with feline aids. I am deeply saddened. He had not been himself and I had a sneaking suspicion something was up. Right now we are treating him for a conjunctivitis but he just looks to be tired.
Have any of you had a cat with this and how long were you able to keep your cat healthy? He is a fixed male and is holding his weight okay. Actually I had a technician tell me that they go down much faster from feline leukemia. He had came here as a stray and I took him in and had him neutered etc. So sad.....

Our kitty Tigger got this a few years ago. We'd never heard of it. He started losing weight and we thought maybe he had worms and finally took him in when some dewormer didn't help him. They said to keep him indoors completely and to keep him from getting around other animals that could make him sick because his immune system was susceptible to everything. We got him some special vitamins and let him eat canned food as a regular meal (it had been more for treats before he got sick) to encourage him to eat. From the time we found out about it until the time he died it was probably 3 months, but he had been sick for awhile before that. He had been a big kitty weighing in at about 15 pounds and he was down to about 8 when we took him to the vet. He was all fluffy hair, so it was probably awhile before we even noticed he was losing weight.
Good luck! We were told if you keep them healthy they can live for a couple of years. I wish I had access to these products when we had Tigger because I'm sure he would have been better longer.

Harry, my cat diagnosed with Feline Aids is doing fine. He had an eye infection and it has cleared up. Feline Aids is similar to aids in humans but is not contagious to humans, only to other cats and mostly via bite wounds. It can lay dormant for many years. You have to be careful as it disrupts the immune system.
Thank God he is much much better and his third eyelids are now normal again.

Hi Kathy! Wow, this is sad, indeed. From what I remember, feline aids can sometimes be worse than leukemia, though I think I remember stories of people who have kept cats for 2 years or so with the disease. There is little to be done but make the kitty comfortable. Many hugs to you

Thanks Alee - earlier this week my dog with a cataract had blood behind her eye and now has glaucoma - it scared me but she is blind already in that eye and is now on an oral med for eye pressure. Luckily she will not lose sight in the other eye.
I also have a litter of Cockers due October 15th.
