not really sure about hives, but this horse has rain rot for sure anybody have any experience with either? we are using a product from blueseal to stop the rain rot, a spray, every seems to like it. Anyone had any issues with hives and rain rot? |

Have you thought about feeding a good quality probiotic for horses? The gut environment is the key to good health. I don't think anyone has suggested that yet, but I would highly recommend it in addition to a good quality hay--if you can find it and afford it. :) Fungal infections are the result of general poor health.
PS--My 11 yo daughter's name is Yasmeen. A lovely name!

Thanks for that Tracy....that's what I was also trying to explain to Yasmine about skin conditions and ivermectin. It worked wonders on the aged molly mule we took in 2 years ago.

You may want to try to double dose her with Ivermectin. That is...one dose and then another in 2 weeks. Ivermectin is good at killing parasites both inside and out.

she is not really becoming high strung, but we have had to work on her ground manners more now, she is getting a lot more calories!.
but for example, she was shivering in 65 degrees yesterday in the pouring rain, she will not go into the run in shed,. she broke out of it once when she has some swelling in the hind right ankle, so to keep her in we put a board across the shed, community day fireworks went of , she went beserk, ran out and now she doent care for being in there, but we do cross tie her in there. |

It sounds like she is slowly improving for you! See if you see any difference after worming her. Was the previous owner rotating wormers or just using the same one over and over? You have to rotate so the worms don't become immune....If she's becoming overly aggressive and energetic I would cut out either the vitamin or cut way back on the feed and mostly just feed a good hay...but you decide what works best for you and your horse!

I dont think! she has flease, the vet did not find any, she was very intchy for a while.. rubbing on the tree and fence, have not seen that for a few days since we started the microteck....but who knows I hope this stuff takes care of it, I shall woorm her toaday and then again in 3 weeks instead of 4? |

hi there! well she had hives as well, then. I thought vintage was not a complete feed?so I have her on some vitamins too. It is time for her worming , today actually. Previous owner did it monthly in summer, 3 months, during the rest of the year. ummmm what else. she is 14 years old... had to have her teeth floated when she came... now she is quite dominant with the other mare here. previously she was not with the horses at the old farm.at least thats what I saw....the betADINE did not take CARE OF THE RAIN ROT, SO WE SWITCHED TO an anitungul shampoo, seemed to help, now microteck seems to be making a difference.
She is not stabled, the field is picked out every day, she does not go in the run in shed, hmmmm what else. 1/2 acre for her and a mate and another field to rotate with, 1/2 acre as well! |

No, I haven't...you can't 'see' rainrot until it appears as scabs and once it becomes chronic it can be very stubborn. You can also aggravate it by overtreating it. You can't use Microtek along with betadine, tea tree oil, etc. because it will aggravate the condition. Pick one course of treatment and be consistent. How old is she? Is she indoors or outdoors? How often do you change her bedding if she's indoors? Did she have fleas or other parasites when you got her? How regular are you worming her and with what? You have to look at the whole picture, not just the fungus.....

Just a thought...what multi vitamin are you feeding? You may not need it if you are also feeding the Senior feed which is a complete feed.....

Rain Rot doesn't disappear overnight and can be very stubborn if you don't address the cause or if a horse has a chronic case. Worming with Ivermectin every two weeks for a course of treatment can help with alot of skin conditions...so can feeding a daily wormer. There is an herbal supplement called Stop Itch by Wendalls Herbs that is also very good for helping to clear up skin conditions. But again, keep in mind it won't cure it overnight...your mare is a work in progress! We took in an elderly molly mule about a year and a half ago in very poor condition and it took a long time to get in good conditon.

when we bought her, she was fed nothing except grass, and the fields were not really that lush.very picked over, but there was some green... no grain no hay , you could not see her ribs at all, but she was on the thin side. Vet said she needed like 100 lbs. Any way. She's on a multivitamin now, a few tablespoons of garlic at each feeding, 1 and 1/2 green scoops of vintage senior, and hay. Hoping she gains weight,
I've been told the same thing, actually about the Immune system prob!. Vet did say her stool was not showing a serious worm burdon, which he was surprised about... HMMMM what else,thats about it, yes.... she came with rain rot. Ok so wash everything and I am using microteck, Bealieve tit or not, I think I;ve seen an improvement! since yesterday. I sprayed twice a day for like 2 days so far! definately better. ... Does rain rot start each dot like a welt like bump or hive and then turn to a scab? just wondering , cause believe it or not, I think the vets so far have really just not nipped it by the way they told me to treat it...

Rain Rot is a fungus and some horses are more prone to it than others...especially a horse that is under stress or not getting the right diet. Are you feeding a horsefeed that is high in sugars and carbs? That could be part of the problem. Also, worming with Ivermectin can help with skin conditions that are caused by fungus. The best stuff I've found for rain rot is by MicroTek. If you look on www.horsehealthusa.com they carry it and it works real fast and isn't messy to apply. Make sure you wash all your saddle blankets, brushes, etc so you aren't spreading it. Hope that helps!

The bumps are small, so the picture I went to look at looked as if the bump was huge? right? they are small bumps, hives like 1/2 inch to 1 inch mabey,, ok so here's what the 1st vet said. Give antibiotics 2 weeks, was the same after the round of anti.'s then the 2nd vet gave a cortizone shot and the hives went away and also prescribed some benedrall type medicine. rain rot still here, even after the 1st vet gave me a iodine scrub. then the 2nd vet gave a antibacterial shaompoo for animals, it is still coming back though!!!! what is the process to rid her of this, Right now we are spraying "microteck" everyone says it works on rain rot !
Anyone have any experience with rain rot that just wont go away? I really really appreciate everyone writing to me want to see a picture of her? Ill try to upload it!

I was thinking tea tree as it's both anti fungal and anti bacterial. Pretty pricey for most folks from a health food store, though.

Pigeon Fever isn't likely to be confused with rain rot, though. Here's a pic of what those abcesses can turn into:

Typically, these abcesses will appear on the lower half of a horse's body, where as rain rot will begin as scabs at the poll or withers and develop along the horse's topline.
If it's rain rot, your horse will not like the treatment, as he feels no pain with the fungus itself but to rid him of it means to break them open by scrubbing and applying something such as betadine. There are other products made specifically for rain rot, but basically you want something anti-fungal there to heal him up.

Yasmine- you might want to call your vet and ask if the area has any outbreaks of Pigeon Fever. Pigeon Fever is not caused by Pigeons, is highly contagious to other horses. The horse starts to get bumps that look like hives and they can start bursting and oozing fluid which carries the highly contagious germs. They can also get these pustules internally. Right now the best treatment is lancing the worst of the external pustules and a VERY long run of antibiotics.
I hope your horse doesn't have this, but it might be worth calling to see about.
