I knew the day would come, but I selfishly hoped that she'd die in her sleep or something. Came home from out of town to find her unable to walk, unable to even stand, with her right leg stretched out behind her. She had been flapping her wings trying to get up, I guess, and one wing was damaged. Broke my heart. My vet euthanized her late last night and she died in my arms, which is where she liked to be.
Sounds funny, but Ernie was such a neat bird. She had more personality than some people I know! She was a Valentine's Day gift from my hubby and, I must say, my favorite (which is something only fellow Farmgirls could understand).

Posted - Sep 29 2008 : 1:34:52 PM I had to have my pet turkey put down this summer and it broke my heart. They are very smart and loveable animals. I am sorry for your loss- I swear my turkey understood every word I said to her! Kathy of the Enchanted Wood

Posted - Sep 27 2008 : 9:10:28 PM I'm so sorry ginny that you lost your sweet pet. It's amazing how much joy pets bring into our lives no matter what kind of animal they are. I've had pet rats before and people thought they were just creepy but my Templeton was an amazing little guy. I loved him dearly and was very sad when he passed. Big farm girl huggzz to you!

Posted - Sep 27 2008 : 06:25:45 AM Mary, isn't it funny how some of them just stand out from the others? I have such great memories of that crazy turkey - I really ought to write a children's book.
Your little banty hen does sound like a character!

Posted - Sep 26 2008 : 10:40:33 AM I'm very sorry for your loss. Ten years is a long time to spend with a pet (I've had to put down two 19 year old cats so I know how it feels) and makes their loss even harder. Hopefully someday you'll find another special turkey.
I have a 'guard banty' that is happy to take on/attack a 120 pound dog, 250 pound human, or anything else that gets near her! She's such a hoot, I doubt I'll find such a character for a long time. :-) |

Posted - Sep 23 2008 : 2:51:36 PM She did have a good home and she was spoiled rotten. She had a 107 lb German Shepherd and a Canada goose as her best friends. All that's left is the goose, and I suspect she's lonely.
I got a Blue Slate turkey this spring and she's pretty neat but doesn't have Ernie's personality, so I guess she was one in a million. She was the goodwill ambassador for Healthy Kids Day at the YMCA five years running. It was so much fun to see little kids' faces light up when they came face to face with a real live turkey!

Posted - Sep 22 2008 : 10:04:12 AM Thanks, girls. It sounds funny, I know, but she really was a hoot. I never knew another turkey so I don't know if her behaviors were unique to her or if all turkeys are like that, but she was quite personable very funny in her younger days. I really enjoyed having her around and her large presence will be missed.

Posted - Sep 22 2008 : 08:42:31 AM I'm so sorry Ginny. I know how hard it is to lose a pet. I've loved hens too and so it isn't weird to me. I am sad for your loss. She at least had her last moments with you, which is where she'd want to be.
