Hi Connie - yes, I will soon be back to my old self...

I will be putting something special in the mail for you tomorrow - sorry for the delay - I really am much more on top of things - maybe I killed too many gray cells??

Take care and keep an eye out.

Connie I hate to be the one to point this out but I think she must have stuck her peak in a electric socket - mine do it all the time

Just kidding - I could not resist - really the problem is the other hens are not sharing their feather gel - rain does horrible things to one's feathers - I can not do a thing with mine without my gel..

I promise to stop - spent too much time in the sun today..

<giggle> no.... I think maybe somewhere's in the lineage something got crossed and this chicken is bearing the distinction of frizzle feathering! She should still lay good eggs!

i am just wondering how on earth i got a frizzle with a batch of rhode island reds? ya think its just a mutant? peace connie in alaska

YOu know Connie, the frizzle characteristic only shows up in a small percentage of chickens that have been crossed. Does it look like it went through a wind sotrm backwards? You can go to www.meyerhatchery.com and do a text search on "frizzle" to see what one looks like. thats where I work. We carry the black ones, but recently bought parent stock for the red for next season. I went to fair last week and saw some white ones... They are cool, but then again, I'm all about the stupid looking ones! I want polish, catalana's and appenzellers for next year! i will call them the Rock Star Chicken for their "hair-do's!"

Connie, I feel kind of stupid now. I've never seen one of those chickens. Sorry! Can't wait to see a picture.

oh my! how on earth did that happen when i ordered all rhode island reds?? i do believe that you ladies have hit on it! she isnt quite as "fluffy" but yes that looks like her feathers! if it ever quits raining long enough i will attempt to get a picture of her so you can see for yourselves. peace connie in alaska

Connie, my guess was the same as Tina! I would think maybe she's not a pure RIR, but likely mixed with a frizzle. Are the feathers possibly like this? http://hamandeggsranch.com/live/bc_frizzle_red_roo1psbr.jpg

could she be a mix with one of those frizzle chickens?
they look like chickens that have been in a wind storm..the feathers curl up on that type.

she isnt laying yet, should start in the next few weeks. she is the only one that looks like this. we have 46 chickens and about half are roosters but they arent harrasing the hens yet. she acts fine. the feathers look like they are curled. weird. i will try to catch her and check for lice but that is unlikely as we dont have much problem with that sort of thing here. no fleas either! lol peace connie in alaska
Kris Sherrill Posted - Sep 16 2008 : 8:05:34 PM
Connie, how old is it? Is she laying eggs? and do you have a rooster?
She could be molting? All mine do not molt at once. Or she might just be doing a dust bath and there's dirt fluffing the feathers up.
She's the only one doing this? And how is she acting? Keeping to herself or with the others?
The rooster could be doing it, too, if you have one.
I'd look for lice and treat for that if you see any. It could be any number of things with a chicken.
Good luck. Kris
