It is so exciting getting your first pullet eggs of the year. I got mine two days ago. One yesterday too. They are so small, and mine are a dark brown. My chickens are called Browns, nothing fancy, but they do lay well. I got 25 young girls in the coop. Would like to get rid of about 20 old bidies. Anyone want them, come and get them. They have been dying off on a regular basis. I would of liked to of gotten some of them butchered off, but ran out of time on butchering day. And no one wants to do it again, this year!

i cant wait for my gals to start laying! should be within the month! how old are they when they slow down on laying or even quit? we will be keeping about a dozen or so layers and will "restock" with our own babies. in october we buther about 30 pullets and young roosters. peace connie in alaska |

I love it when people rave about the yolk color.
Pretty sobering when you compare store bought to ultra fresh. You can't even beat the so called organic ones either!
Pity I have an egg allergy but ironic that we have a ton of chickens and sell the eggs. |

My pullets just started laying too. We love the little eggs. The yolk is almost orange. My hens are slowing down so they will be gone soon. I don't feed them over the winter while they are not laying. Feed prices jumped $3 on a 50 lb bag of feed. We don't butcher our hens. I don't like the idea of having to buy chicken at the grocery store but feel secure in knowing that we could butcher if we needed to. |

Alee we have tried the skinning thing, but did not care for it. We have a plucker so that was easier. Just the mess of it all, and the gutting that no one likes. Besides old hens tend to be pretty fatty, and it gets slippery!

Aren't those eggs just the cutest thing?
My young gals have been laying for about a month now. Some eggs are still on the really small size, but I also sell these to a lady who likes to spoil her dogs.
We butchered some of our older gals this past spring. Used the skinning method...less mess. |

Hi Michelle-
Have you tried butchering the old birds and taking off their skin so you don't have to pluck? Or is it the slaughter part that everyone doesn't want to do?
Congrats on your first eggs from the young girls! Isn't the cycle amazing?
