Hello!
I'm so excited I just had to share. We have two beehives we got this past spring, and one that we started from a swarm we captured. We had our very first honey harvest today. We weren't sure how much honey we would get our first year, but from just one hive we have about 16 lbs! Next year should be even more!

Oooh, bees. I'd love to have a hive, but it just wouldn't go off too well in the city! DOH!

any good recommendations on books about beekeeping. We going to set up a hive for next year. We have been buying our honey from a neighbor and he is getting us started. I can't wait to taste our own honey. Hubby will have to get it from hive (allergic), but I can put it in the jars. Congrats on your harvest!!

Fantastic! I'd love to hear how you captured the swarm, I bet it's a good story. With my luck I'd get stung all over, adding to my appreciation of your feat! I hope you enjoy your bees for a good long time.

How wonderful! Congrats!

Once we get some year-round "bee-food" plantings started, I plan on starting a hive as well. Can't wait!

Awesome. Congrats to you. Do you get to eat the honey, too? Or, do you have to let it set a while? I love honey!

congrats on your harvest! i would early love to keep bees but 2 things keep me from doing it. first i am very allergic to bees! second our winters are so long and harsh that is is very difficult at best to keep bees over so you have to buy a new bunch of bees every year! enjoy your sweet harvest! peace connie in alaska

Thanks folks!
When we were pulling the frames, my boyfriend said that he felt like he was stealing from them. I said nope-just collecting the rent for the nice houses, medical care, and general supervision!

It really is a fun, rewarding hobby!

That is so cool Jennifer!!!
We have 4 bee hives and we actually got some honey this year. Last year we didn't get a drop. They barely had enough to get them through the winter. We had a terrible drought last year. We have been fighting hard to keep our bees....so many things seem to threaten them. Some years we don't get honey but we still keep them so we will have pollination.
Your honey will taste so awesome on biscuits, homemade bread, and peanut butter and honey sandwiches. I love putting a little in my hot tea. Honey is awesome.

YEA!

We have a new hive too. Was fun stopping by on my walks and just watch all the activity.

We don't fool with the bees, a fella who got the bees for us does all this stuff. He has 2 other hives on our road further on down. So when it comes time for him to collect, I'll be curious to see what all he gets from the new hive.

We planted buckwheat all over and also watched bees lap up after all the broken/busted up watermelon.

That is awesome! My husband and I were watching a show put out on RFD-TV from the University of Georgia about bee-keeping. It really is fascinating! I want to have at least 2 hives when we get our own property. That way we will have local pollinators! I am a bit obsessive compulsive about knowing whether the things I need to succeed are in the area, so at least this way I will be able to monitor the health of the bees and know they are helping my crops! LOL
