Hubby just got back from the vet's office. They palpated the kitty and said they didn't feel anything, but that it didn't mean there might not be a baby or two hiding deep inside her belly. They didn't do x-rays because they said if she was in late pregnancy that the kittens wouldn't show up anyway. Sooo, we STILL don't know if there's kittens on the way, but at least we know that she's now a very healthy cat. She was skin and bones when we rescued her and her coat was very coarse. She's now got a shiny coat, has filled out, and is spoiled beyond belief by my hubby.

We rescued a kitty the end of June/first of July and of course she was also being followed by a big tomcat. I'm sure you know where this story is leading already She lives at my hubby's office, since we already have 3 housecats and a dog at home.

She's showing signs of late pregnancy ie: weight gain but not huge in the belly like you'd see in a larger litter, has become extremely affectionate, her nipples are larger and area around them are swollen and dark, and she's leaked a bit of colostrum, but I don't feel any kittens moving around. Now if she was bred the day we found her, she should have been due by now to deliver. I stopped by hubby's office before we went to church and took her temp, and it's still 102, so no prelabor temp drop yet. Of course hubby said no way will he take a cat's temperature, but I left the thermometer there for him.

My poor hubby has been a nervous wreck, and has even been staying at his office so he can be there if she has any trouble. I don't know what he'll do besides call me cause he knows NOTHING about birthin no babies Miss Scarlett!

LOL Jenny!

As of this morning still no kittens. Hubby is calling the vet to try and get her in to be seen today. I think if this is a false pregnancy, he's gonna be crushed. He was soooo looking forward to the pitter patter of baby kitty feet...LOL!

When I read the subject line of your post I though it said The cat that wouldn't poop. Before I read it I was trying to think of laxative type foods to give your cat. Well, now I just feel silly~!! I hope it all works out will with your cat who won't POP.

And me too! Please keep us updated, whatever way this goes. I have never heard of false pregnancies in cats OR dogs, LOL! Shows how ignorant I am, right??

I've never heard of false pregnancy in cats, but I do know it's common in dogs. I have a fat pregnant cat right now. She was given to me by a friend several weeks ago (I expected two "older" kittens, NOT a pregnant kitty too!) She lost her first litter of kittens the day she arrived. I did not expect her to get knocked up again so soon!!! But here she is, this loooooong lanky kitty that looks like she ate a WATERMELON! (or an anoconda that ate a goat! LOL) I'm pretty sure she'll carry to term this time, but I'm so not looking forward to MORE cats, considering I went from only 2 old girls for the past 3 yrs to NINE cats in just a few weeks!!! (not including the expected litter-- but I DO love kittens. it's all the shot giving I'm not looking forward to, AND getting them ALL fixed.... sigh...)

Anyway, I CAN feel the kittens in her belly. They feel kind of "Lumpy" and you can feel them moving around. If you don't feel that with your kitty, then there just might be a false pregnancy going on! (I am sooo NOT taking MY cats temperature!!! I'll just wait for the blessed event to take place on it's own) That's too funny that your Hubby is acting like an expectant father! Let us know what happens ok? You got ME curious! ~~~ Tracy

You might want to take her to the vet. Our farm kitty wouldn't pop, and I'd been monitoring her (stethescope, it was very happy and exciting). After a trip to the vet, we have our momma cat (spayed now)but lost the litter. I learned that sometimes the pregnancy goes too long, and the kittens can grow too much to be delivered. For the sake of the mother, and especially if you feel no movement, you'd better get her checked out.

I'm wondering if it isn't a false pregnancy myself, but of course hubby insists otherwise because when we found her at the rehab house we were working on, there was a big ole tomcat hot on her trail, and evidence of 'kitty love' because she had bite marks on her neck/back.

I've been doing research online and it said that it's extremely rare for a cat to have a false pregnancy. I'm going to try and talk hubby into taking her to the vet to be checked out.

Our dog just went through a false pregnancy. I saw that she mated with a neighbor dog and I watched her gain weight, grow large teats, and even get milk. When she was a week "overdue" I took her to the vet and he did an exam and ultra-sound. No puppies!! After awhile her body got back to normal when it realized that she was not pregnant, but she did get a uterus infection that we had to give her antibiotics for. It is strange how that can happen! I would get her checked out though, just in case it isn't a false pregnancy and she is just way overdue and needs help to get those kittens out!

Diana- It could be a false pregnancy. Sometimes, as fertile as kitties are, the breeding doesn't "take". If she still hasn't produced anything in a couple of days, you might want to take her to a vet to get an x-ray taken.
