I have two dogs. Gunner ( one year old ) and Beau only a few months. They are both pure bread, AKC registered golden labs. Wonderful bloodlines...beautiful dogs. Here's my problem. Gunner keeps mounting Beau and it is really driving me nuts. I know it's natural and I had the recommendation to spray Gunner with a squirt bottle and say NO!!! when he is caught..but what about long term. I don't want them fixed because we plan to stud them out when they are older. Any help is much appreciated. Gunner by the way, is very hyper..energetic and just plain nutty (gotta love him). And Beau is my little lover, mellow, hangs out in the house all day and is absolutely a doll.
Any help would be appreciated...please

Thank you for the reassurance! It's just a bit embarassing when I have so many people in and out of my house everyday! I will hang in there, I love my pups and they are a part of our family!

Hi Heather, Beverly is right sounds like a domination issue. I wonder if you can say no and squirt and then maybe get Gunner distracted with a toy or a game of some sort. I have black labs and I know they can be very hyper and seem to do really well if you can give them something to do (a walk, or just out to run, a ball game). Like Beverly said eventually things will calm down Labs seem to become less hyper after about two years or so. Hang in there and continue with the training, like kids one day you'll wake up and you'll be able to see that all your hard work training really did pay off! :D

heather,
the reason your older dog is doing this has nothing to do with mating. He is showing the younger one he is boss. It is a top dog sort of thing not trying to mount for breeding. once they figure out that he is top dog and the other one will eventually either let him know he is not or just let him be top dog it will stop and they will have it all figured out and be done with it. Heather-
The more consistent you are with saying "No" the sooner Goofy Gunner will get it. Also as Beau grows up (about one and a half or so) he will stick up to Gunner. Gunner will also get bored of it someday!
You could also try crating Gunner after you have said "No!" and giving him a time out to calm down a bit.
