READ THE ENTIRE STORY BELOW THE LINK PLEASE

I got this today (8/17) from my friend Carmen who works with AAR. The original Gracie in the story is Meggie's (our dog) mom. She was a wonderful, severely abused dog that we rescued when Meggie was just 5 weeks old. Carmen took her and we kept Meggie. Gracie recently passed away from heart failure.
Thanks,
Denise

Today my neighbor found a hurt dog in a ravine, he came and got my boyfriend to help him get her out. She was in water up to her neck, Craig had to crawl through all kinds of brambles then down a very steep incline. When we got her out, we rushed her to the vet. On the drive over i lay in the back with her, she had a huge hole in her foot, it was obviously broken, and a hole on her back and side. She would not move her back legs, I was thinking she might be paralyzed. This whole time she was just looking at us in the sweetest way, not an aggressive bone in her body. At the vet she was given meds for the pain and x-rayed. As it turns out she did not fall in the ravine and hurt herself. She was shot in the back and leg and most likely thrown in the ravine to die. At this time she is being operated on to remove all the broken and shattered bones in her leg. She has also had all the infected tissue removed and cleaned. The infection is very bad, the bullet wound in her back missed her spine by inches, and we have no idea how long she had been laying in the dirty water of the stream. Now she is stable, and been given antibiotics. I have named her Gracie, after a beautiful girl i rescued 2 years ago that has passed on to rainbow bridge. Hopefully Gracie is a fighter and will beat this infection, and be able to find a family that will love her and never hurt her. i have attached the link to our donation page on our website. Every little bit helps. And please cross post this to as many people you can, it is important that people know that this goes on in our country, and take a stand to stop it.

and yes, people can be horrible!

I remember when I was a child, we lived in a bad neighborhood. when my dad bought the house before i was born, it was a fairly nice place, but declined rapidly. when i was 7 or 8 i was outside riding my bike in the driveway and front yard. people in the neighborhood were always getting in trouble for having mean pitbulls running loose, fighting them, etc. The people across the street had 5 Great Danes tied to two trees on ropes no longer than 2 feet. I think they were trying to "train" them to basically get mean so they could fight them against pits in practice for real dog fights. They would come outside and beat them HARD with chairs, sticks, whatever they had in their hands, and they starved them.
Ever since I saw that as a child, I have been particularly aware of/alert for animal cruelty - i don't want to EVER be responsible for not reporting something like that!
and i take in animals all the time - just found two kittens in a dumpster behind our Lowe's a couple weeks ago starving to death. They're nice and chubby now, and getting really friendly, had antibiotics from the vet.

I love animals so much, all of your stories have made my eyes tear up

You don't even have to go to the vet for mange, if you have a local farmer's co-op or large pet store, they should have liquid sulphur. It costs a few dollars, and you dillute it in enough water to soak the dog and use it to thoroughly rinse the dog's fur and skin. You may have to treat a couple times for a really bad case, and it does smell like, well, sulphur! but it works. And putting lotion and garlic on the affected areas will help moisturize and prevent reinfestation.

You can treat mange with ivomectin which is not expensive at all, just have to get the proper dose from the vet. They can also cover the dog in old motor oil, let it sit about 10 minutes then wash the dog well with dish soap. Just don't let the dog lick with the oil on. Mange is miserable, they are mites that bite and make them itch horribly. Poor puppies!!!

My husband's sister has a few dogs who look so flea bitten and mangy its really gross. (is is mange which is very treatable)

i don't think they realize how serious this is, especially when over 75% of the dogs hair is gone.

She says she can't afford a vet visit.

i say, if you can't afford vets, then you shouldn't have a pet.

its just not fair to the animal

for 2 cents, I'd go out and buy the stuff for her, but it's not my place to show someone just how ignorant she is!

Yes it is sad that people can bring a living creature into thier lives and suddenly toss them away. I have people dropping animals off all the time at my farm. So far a dog, two cats one pregnant and a bunny rabbit. The cat had kittens and the kitten rescue took the kittens so I had momma kitty fixed and she is a great little mouser.

I agree Dawn. I don't have enough room for everything I would like to take in nor the funds to properly care for them all, but I can't stand to see an animal neglected or go hungry. At first, I was afraid that the stray would fight with my neighbors older dog, but the older dog seemed to understand it had a need and allowed it to eat as much as it wanted. The reason, I mentioned it to my neighbor was so that she would leave extra food out on purpose. I am glad she does.

It's a shame how people neglect animals.... I love animals and if I was allowed I would take in as many as I can... some people just tick me off, majorly!

I take in everything. If I can get this barn cleaned up and a stall/fence put up, I'll take horses/other. I hate what people do to animals. I flat out ticks me off. I have rescued baby bats, wild rabbits, birds and such with great success is reahbbing them and letting them go. PS: I now have 3 dogs (2 rescued), 4 cats (2 rescued). Its unforgivable to me.

Good for Gracie lets hope she is a fighter and pulls through just to show everyone she can do it!

If ignorant souls are to do away w/ "problem" animals, how about quick and painless rather than long and drawn out and obviously very painful

people are so cruel

stuff like this sickens me

There is a stray dog that limps in my neighborhood. Every night, he visits my neighbors house. He use to come in the morning and eat her dogs food. I mentioned it to her and now I think she leaves out extra for the poor thing. He knows where he can get a good meal. I really don't get how people can just dump their pets off like that!

So sad. You have to wonder what has happend to a person (or persons) to bring them to a point in their lives where they would abuse a helpless animal so cruelly. Sounds like someone with a lot of their OWN anger and pain, but it's still no excuse for doing something so HORRIBLE!! The other thing I can't understand is people who have "Pets" and let them starve to death right under their nose. If you can't take care of it, you don't NEED it!! Find it a home somewhere else! Turn it into a shelter, do SOMETHING for the animal. I have had quite a few critters over the years that have come from some "not-so-good-situations." If they could talk, I can only imagine what they would tell me. Probably not something I'd want to know. I might seriously HURT someone.

I hope Gracie makes it and that they find the person/s responsible. I also hope they get a suitable punishment as well, and not let off the hook with a slap on the wrist.

Carmen has contacted the news, the police won't do anything because they didn't see it happen unless they can find shell casings and fingerprints. They are hoping that if they can get Gracie's pic on the Atlanta news that someone will recognize her.

Some one shot my cat with a bear hunting arrow once! Thankfully my cat lived, he was in the vet hospital for quite some time though. And I too wonder, WHY?!?!?! I don't get it! People are sick!

Poor Gracie!

I used to volunteer my time at a vet clinic when I was a teenager. One night the vet was out doing some work for some ranchers on their range cattle (before everyone carried cell phones!) so we could not get a hold of him. A couple brought in a dog they had found along side the rode. It had between 10-15 gun shot wounds. Someone had used the dog as target practice and then left it for dead along side the road.

It is horribly sad to see people treat animals this way. It is cruel and torture for the poor animal.

I hope Gracie has a complete and speedy recovery! I am glad she has a loving home now!

Doesn't that just make you want to whip somebody's butt?

Marly:
I remember that incident that your talking about. I saw it on our news too. In Louisiana, Debra Barlow is the Animal Cruelty investigator and she is good at what she does. Right now, she is taking a couple of firefighters to court for using pit bulls in dog fighting.

Denise:
Yes, call the tv station and make them aware of this. Set up posters at the local pet stores and other vet offices for donations. See if there is an animal cruelty investigator in your area. Animal cruelty is illegal and should be punished.

Bless that poor baby!! I pray that she will recover and find herself a loving home.

Oh, my gosh. That is horrible. How do people sleep at night knowing what they have done. I'm so glad that your friends were the ones to find Gracie. Keep us posted as to her progress. I'll keep her in my prayers.

Denise!
The neighbor and your boyfriend should get an award! I feel so sad for the dog (Gracie). I will pray for her. Indeed, how cruel. I would call the local TV station and report this. I would find out who did this. How cruel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I support you in believing that people should know that this sort of crap happens to defenseless dogs/animals. Be sure to keep us posted. I'll check back tomorrow. You know this happen somewhere in Louisiana, and the person was found because the people reported it to the local TV station. Funds were set up immediately. You might want to think of doing that, too. Please keep us updated. Again, thank you to all of you who care for this dog. You are all good people.
