We have only three hens, and they've just started laying. Today for lunch we had toast and eggs and two of the eggs were double yolked. If I understand correctly, that means that one of my hens will almost always lay double yolk eggs? How cool is that!
So we can check off "science class" for the day, little Max (age 5) cracked the eggs and beat them to ready for the frying pan, and Noah (age 10) saw our Bonnie hen lay her first egg this morning. Too cool! (Can you tell I like the word "cool" hehe)

That would be super cool to have a breed that lays eggs w/ no yolks, I make my omlets with one egg, and two just whites...would save the waste...

With some breeds of chickens, it's not unusual to have double yolkers when the pullets first start laying....some of them do it all their laying days. As far as wierd eggs...I've had the egg in an egg, a pullet egg the size and color of an olive (kept that one), an egg without a shell--just like a thick version of the membrane that you find just inside the shell, and sometimes bantem chickens lay eggs without yolks. I've heard them called 'witch eggs', it's a very odd thing to crack an egg with no yolk....but low cholesterol for sure!

Oh how cute!!! My kids used to get the biggest kick out of the chickens and collecting the eggs too. Those were fun times! Enjoy! :)

That egg in an egg sounds like a magic trick! Well even if our double yolk eggs are only for awhile, it sure is fun. Out at Walmart the other day, Sam started telling everybody that commented on "oh, four boys? all yours? no girls?" (the usual comments) Sam said "yeah, but we have chickens and THEY are girls AND they give us eggs with double yolks." Only Sam's got a lisp so it sounds super cute coming out.
Anyhoo, we're stoked on the eggs, and the girls seem to be very proud and that much more talkative to us when we go out in the morning "look what we did momma!"

Have any of you ever heard of an egg-within-an-egg? I guess sometimes (very rarely though) an entire egg-- shell and ALL-- will apear inside ANOTHER egg-- shell and all. Interesting. Something I'd like to see someday. But the double yolked eggs are fun too!! Congrats Paige!!

I used to be the poultry supt at the county fair. It was so much fun candleing the eggs and seeing what was in there.
Ive never had any doubles from my banties. I wonder why they dont seem to have double yolks.
I also read some place the other day that there can be up to 8 or 9 yolks at a time in a egg.
Now I would like to see that, id even like to see 3

Oh How fun! My kids always got a big kick out of getting double yolks.
My experience has been also that when the hens first lay they are more likely to lay doubles but like its been said, once they get better regulated, the occurance of double yolks goes down. But maybe your hen will be the exception. :)

Hi Paige- When my girls started laying I could count on a double yolker each day but alas now that they are older and have regulated themselves rarely do I see those double yolkers anymore. Enjoy them while you have them!

Paige congrat's and how special for your guys.
I had this year a triple yoke egg. I called my sons and then kept it until they could come back to the farm.. My sons started with chickens when I started them in 4H and 14 years later they still can remember all their names and tell great stories about their wonderful hens. Many ribbons, shows and stories are what make a great lifetime on the farm. Hugs those chickens - they work hard.

I couple of months ago, I had bought some eggs from a local farmer, and 6 of the 12 eggs had double yolks. Your posting taught me something I did not know. How cool! I learn something new every day. Thanks.

Awesome! I had a flock of RI Reds at one time that had that tendency..it was nice...I could count on about 1/2 of them to be double yolks. It happens rarely with my banties now, but not as often as that group. Lucky you!!
