Okay....my dog unearthed a bunny nest right in the middle of my back yard....she took one out and I got it and put it back in the nest although not sure it was from that nest or another? She didn't hurt it I don't think but I've heard that the mother won't come back if they smell human scent on them...well...I picked it up and this morning I saw the nest was uncovered and the bunny(s) (I only saw the one on top or the only one)was exposed to the sun so I grabbed some dry grass/weeds and covered the nest but do you think the mother is coming back? I don't want the baby to lay there and die...is there something I should or shouldn't do? I HATE this when I find babies and I don't know what to do...can anyone help me???? PLEASE!!!! Plus...why do they build/place their nest right in the middle of my back yard? Darn those wiley wabbits!

So sorry your little bunny died. I know how you feel. Years ago my cat brought one home and after caring for it a few days it died. Just hearing about your bunny is making me "tune up".

Awwww I'm so sorry it didn't make it. When you said it was laying on its side, etc I had a feeling it might have had internal injuries :( But at least it got to be loved and cared for while it was here on this earth by you.

Sandra, I know that you did the best you could, bless you for being such a kind soul
I'm so sad that the bunny didn't make it, but I was kind of thinking that it might not anyway. I'm glad that you found him and gave him comfort though and kept him from the hot sun and predators.

Oh, I'm sorry, Sandra...I know how you feel...the bunnies I cared for were my first success, actually. Prior to that, I lost a deer mouse and a wren and I cried like a baby both times. It sounds like she might have had some internal injuries that you couldn't see, but bless your sweet soul for taking care of the little one. There is a special place at the table for folks like you, you know.

Sandra,
You did more then most would. Still a sad thing, but trying to do the right thing is never wrong. I would imagine that all four little legs are working good in animal heaven.

Okay...I have bad news...the baby bunny died. I got up to feed it at 2:00 a.m. and it was dead. I sort of thought it wasn't going to make it...too little too late I guess. It was lethargic when I found it and when I was feeding it it didn't feel too warm but of course I prayed and hoped but it wasn't meant to be. The only thing I'm glad about is that I found it when I did and it didn't lay out there in the heat and blaring sun and that I held it and told he/she that they were loved. Ahhhh....rough start to the morning but she's not suffering anymore. thank you ALL for ALL your help and advice! Maybe next time I will know better as to what to do and be quicker about it too. The wildlife person never called...maybe on vacation but between you gals and the people at the grocery store and pharmacy...I learned a lot about taking care of wildlife "orphans" that may come in handy later on. Sorry to give out bad news but I guess "that's life" and death is a big part of life...thanks again everyone! I tried and then I cried!

The bunny still has the white blaze but it's eyes are open. She moved all the bunnies and left this one and it's because my dog picked it up and then I put it back in the nest...I 've since learned I should have used garden gloves...DUH. It seems to be lethargic and may have a bad and/or deformed front leg. I've fed it every 2 hours so far but not sure...I did squirt the milk a little when it started sucking but it was so weak at first....I hope I didn't hurt it. I would squirt a little in the side of it's mouth and then he would start sucking or swallowing...not sure which. It was laying on it's side at first and now is sitting up a little more but I can't tell....I think it is crippled up from birth, i don't think my dog had time to hurt it but who knows. There was no blood though and it calmed down the minute I picked it up. I'll do my best! Thanks for all your advice! The wildlife rehabilitation gal never called me back.

Sandra,

Does the bunny still have the white blaze on it's forehead? Are it's eyes opened yet? Momma bunnies only feed their young once or twice a day, as their milk is very rich. Lots of folks falsely assume that nests of baby bunnies have been abandoned because they don't see momma feeding or sitting on the nest. Momma rabbits don't sit on the nests or feed multiple times a day as to not draw predators to the nest with her scent.

If you hand feed the baby you're going to have to do it every 3-4 hours around the clock. Make sure that you hold the baby in an upright position and don't squirt the milk into it's mouth, let it suck the milk out of the eyedropper. If you squirt it into its mouth it will aspirate the milk into it's lungs.

I'll say a prayer that the little bunny makes it!

Okay...I caled Arkansas Game and Fish and they did give me the name and number of a rehabilitation person and I called her home and cell but no call back yet. Meanwhile I went to the store and got goat milk and a dropper and fed the little thing. It looks to be weak and maybe crippled....I don't think my dog did it....almost like it has a bad leg and it is weak but it took 3 eye droppers full and pooped on me so that's a good sign. I just happened to have gotten a bird cage at an antique store so I lined it with newspaper and then grass and clover. I didn't want to overfeed it...is 3 droppers full enough for awhile? I sort of had to put it in his/her mouth on the side and then it would swallow but it is still laying on its side and not looking too perky. OH...I hope and pray I can save this little bunny...it breaks my heart but all I can do is try and God's will be done. thanks for your expert advice! When I went to the pharmacy the gal there concurred and said her father has saved bunnies, baby squirrels and is now nursing a baby deer that lost it's mother all with goats milk. I wonder how often and how much I should feed it? Wish me luck!

Thanks you guys....I think I'll give them a call and I'll let you know what they say...I know someone said it is against the law to harbor wild animals....in Iowa it was and they would come and get it but then they never got back to me to let me know what happened to it....made me wonder what they REALLY did with that bunny.

Wow, Jonni, that is something! Sandra..you could either try to rehab or, perhaps, like Jonni, give your local Wildlife commission a call and they can point you toward any local rehabbers in your area...who can then either advise, or take, the bunny...good luck!

Well, our lab brought me one, then two last summer around to the back door, when I was expecting company from Georgia, and frantically running around getting dinner together. He didn't hurt them, being a soft mouthed retriever, but I had NO idea where he took them from since we have about an acre.

I called a wildlife rehab specialist who told me to get an eyedropper and some goats milk from the grocery, and feed the little ones with the dropper. I kept them for about a week and a half, right about the time they "pooping" and eating grasses (I filled the birdcage with dandelions and clover and grasses) and, based on the advice of the wildlife gal, we took them into the woods to see if they were ready, and those little buggers took off like a shot, right out of that cage. Adorable...and totally worth it.
