I was just on the computer and there was a knock on the door, which is odd when living in the country, especially this time of night. There was a woman there who was shaken, asking me if I have a big black dog. My dog Annie had run out in front of her car like she was chasing something and the woman swerved, but she heard a small bump. Those of you who know me, may remember me losing several dogs to the road in the last year and a half, so you would understand my freaking out. She said she came back and didn't see her on the road, she was worried that she was hurt and crawled away. I grabbed my flashlight and she brought her car and we checked the ditches and couldn't find her. I thanked her for stopping- you have no idea how much that meant to me! I wish I would have asked her her name or phone number or something! I told her she could go, that I would keep looking. Annie hides under our trailer when she gets scared, so I checked there, and she was under there! The lady was still pulling away so I was flashing the flashlight at her, but she didn't see it, she was probably still checking the ditches. Anyway, I really wish I knew who she was so I could thank her some more and tell her that Annie is okay, just scared. She has a small wound on her back leg, but she is walking just fine and I brought her into the house to stay until I get her a fenced-in area done. No more dogs running loose. I should never have had her running loose after my last dog got hit. God has decided to give me and her a second chance, so I don't want to blow it. Thank you everyone for listening, as I had no one else to talk to and I needed to tell someone how grateful I am, not just for Annie being okay, but for the awesome lady who stopped and told me.

I'm so glad your dog is ok. What a admirable person to come and let you know! I had a dog hit and killed once on the road and it was terrible so I understand your fear. Now no dog comes from the kennels to the house without a leash on my watch. Hubby will bring the brittany in every evening w/o leash, but not me! Never want to go thru that again! Take care and hug the dog extra often tonight! |

Your're story is making my eyes water....I am so glad for you both that she is ok. I know you wanted to thank and let he knwo of the outcome, maybe a sign outside near your road could be posted, or on a tree maybe.....

what a sweet woman .. (an angel unawares) .. i'm so glad your little pooch is o.k. ... oh yes, ROADS are about a critter's worse enemy.
i have a dear friend who has a teeeeeeeeensy little dog .. that escapes from the house from time to time (she has four active children that go in and out all the time!) they live right on a country road .. and a couple nights ago .. they lost poor little gracie to a truck!
we built fences right away for our two. we are a good half mile away from the road .. but a dog can find their way that far easily. also, i didn't want them running up on other's farms.

I am so glad everyone is okay now. I agree, it can be hard to lose one of your babies like that. Good luck on your fences.

It renews your faith in humanity when something like that happens. I hit and killed someone's cat once, it just leapt in front of my car and I was quaking when I went to their door, but they were so glad i stopped to tell them. I have lost several kitties to the road over the years and no one has ever stopped to let me know what happened. I'm glad your dog is okay, they sure know how to scare us, these little furpals!

I'm doing better now, not so shaken up. I've checked and rechecked Annie and all I can find is the scrape on her leg. The lady said that she thought she barely clipped her, she knew she didn't hit her hard, so I'm hopeful that nothing else happened to her. She is acting completely normal and was just eating and now she's laying on my bed looking at me to see if I'm going to join her. I think I'm going to tie her up for the time being, until I can get a fence done, which I was going to do anyway. Actually I have two dog fences to build and I need to refence where the goats are, because some have been getting out and I have been finding them in the neighbor's cornfield. Hubby has been getting that ready, we just have to put it up. My other dog pen besides Annie's is for my Shih Tzus, who had been in with the Shelties, but the Shelties like to play rough, and the Shih Tzus do not. I still haven't fixed the horse/goat pasture fence that was moved during the floods, but it's holding up, so it's not really a huge priority, just on my huge list of things to do. :)

I was so glad that you did tell us about Annie. So happy she is okay. I live out in the country, too, and my dog stays in the house. When I first moved out here, my dogs were outside dogs. But- the road is crazy with all sorts of fast drivers. I lost one on the road and that did it for me. How are you now? I hope feeling better. You are a great dog mom. Take care, Heather.

I'm glad that your dog wasn't hurt too badly..and it was very nice of the lady to come and tell you about it.
I hope that come tomorrow your dog is doing o.k. and no injuries that you can't see have occured. Yes..a fenced in area would be a good thing..not just for the dog, but for your own peace of mind.
