I want to get a cat someday soon, but bf is VERY allergic. We will be moving to the country and will hopefully have a nice barn to go along with it. How do you turn a kitten into an outdoor cat???? I worry about just letting it stay outside, I don't want it to get preyed upon :(

I guess I never thought about a cat finding ME! Great idea - I'd also like to rescue 2 kitties from the pound. Thanks for ALL your input - all so helpful :)

I would give it a few days. We never have a shortage of strays or cats that people bring out to the "country" and drop off. I have never had to get a barn kitty because they always find me first! Right now we have a HUGE grey tabby that only wants a place to eat and sleep. Doesn't want anything to do with people. Yesterday I spotted a new black and white kitty in the field so we will see if it is more friendly or not.

I'm not sure about Utah but around here the coyotes are very bad about getting cats if you live in the country. Just be careful and check it out.

May God bless those who love the soil,

This article was in Grit awhile back. It is all about barn cats.

I have a 12 year old fixed male cat (Pumpkin) that I have had since he was a kitten. He was always a mostly outdoor cat (his choice..I couldn't keep him IN the house) and these days he isn't welcome in the house (he sprays...ick!) anymore. He does fine all winter. We have a mudroom he can come into and he sleeps in the hay barn..warm and cozy. He has a lady friend (also fixed..she was a stray that I ended up having spayed so she could stay) named Fiona now and they pal around together.

leave it in the barn but bring it food just don't leave enigh food that it sits around and attra ts other animals. Cats will stay wwhere there is food. Boy cats are more prone to leaving for long periods of time.
