I just recently learned that there are 5 full grown skunks living in our air conditioning unit!!!! Does anyone have ANY idea of how to get rid of them without them spraying us? I really don't want to kill them... I think they let stinks when they die, too. What's a farmgirl to do?

Ladies, thank you so much... I will tell my hubby so he can get them taken care of.

First I would call your local animal control to remove them. Let them get sprayed. Besides once they have enjoyed the company of our property they will tell others. Then I found pepermint oil works wonders. I had both raccoons and skunk try and live right outside my shop door and on my front deck. All I did was soak cotton rags with the oil and place them around the outside of the home and shop. Once they got their noise full that was the last of them. Also it is not so horrible as moth balls. I also have three great pry's who spend their time now chasing them away from the pastures. I hated when I first moved my fiber animals in and they would get sprayed - stayed on the fiber for the longest of times.
Good luck and Good smelling.

I always put out mothballs when we have skunk problems. I'm sure you don't want mothball smells wafting through your house, but perhaps if you could put some near to the air conditioner, maybe tape a box with holes in it, fill it with some mothballs. We had skunks living under our porch and they vacated their home after we put mothballs there. Good luck. Karin

I've heard "stories" or what I'd like to call tales (maybe fairy tales) about catching skunks but I am not going to pass them on because I don't buy them for a minute. I was wondering if you could "smoke" them out with a fire in a can or something placed strategically? We have skunks everywhere around here but luckily they haven't gotten inside of anything. They did get in the feed store the other day and whew, the smell blew your socks off entering the store!

Good luck.
