Posted - May 21 2008 : 12:30:07 PM I got some Maran eggs in the mail today. I ordered them through eBay, and they took a while to arrive. Although there were plenty of extras, about four were smashed, and b/c she wrapped them individually in bubble wrap and packed them in shredded paper, the yolk went EVERYWHERE.
I've got eight eggs that don't appear to have gotten any yolk on them. I've got six that I'm about to wash. I've also got a dozen local Ameraucanas in the incubator since last night, b/c I couldn't wait any longer for these Maran eggs. WWFGD? Do I:
Put just the eight in Put the six yucky ones in as well, after washing and letting them dry Don't put any in!!! |

Posted - May 23 2008 : 07:39:19 AM I would not wash the eggs though. I seem to remember the hen gracing each egg with a coating that slows dessication. If you wash them you make them more porous, and it's actually easier for bacteria to get in and out. For eggs going into a refrigerator it wouldn't be that much of a concern; but for eggs going in an incubator, it's an issue to think about. |

Posted - May 22 2008 : 04:42:35 AM Yes, totally What Would FarmGirls Do?
I did go ahead and put them all in.
Hopefully this hatch will be better than the last one. I'm not sure what Hova-Bator is thinking, but the reservoir I'm supposed to keep filled for most of the hatch doesn't make it anywhere near as humid as the extension office webpages I'm reading say it should be. I got a thermometer/hygrometer combo from the pet store, so at least I can tell! |

Posted - May 21 2008 : 3:32:38 PM Oh no! how awful! Put them all in, you have the best chance of survival of them that way no matter what, hopefully some of them are still viable by this point. I love Marans and want some too, they are lovely. I am keeping my fingers crossed that all turns out well and you have little peepers soon. Keep us updated, won't you?

Posted - May 21 2008 : 1:01:00 PM I would put them all in because I would want to give the little chicks every chance possible- but that's just me and no real basis for my decision. Can you candle them to see if they are still viable?
